Its successor, AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty (DAS-C01), also retired, with its final exam on April 8, 2024. Neither credential is currently available for a new exam appointment or recertification. This article keeps its original Big Data Specialty title to explain an important part of AWS certification history. It should not be used as a booking guide or an invitation to purchase old exam questions.

The currently available AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate (DEA-C01) assesses a related but different professional role. It is not simply the historical Specialty exam renamed a second time, and old BDS-C00 domain percentages cannot substitute for its current blueprint. The useful carryover from earlier big-data study is understanding how information moves, changes, becomes queryable, and is protected. The current path adds explicit emphasis on data pipeline operations, quality, governance and cost. The examples below follow one practical retail data pipeline rather than a long list of disconnected service names.

Understand the retired Big Data credential without confusing it with today’s exam

In the earlier AWS analytics ecosystem, Big Data Specialty study included collecting records, storing large datasets, processing and analyzing them, and implementing security. AWS renamed the certification to Data Analytics – Specialty as its analytics assessment evolved. The new name was announced in 2020, but the replacement itself did not remain available indefinitely. AWS formally announced the retirement of Data Analytics – Specialty alongside other Specialty exams in 2024 and introduced Data Engineer – Associate as a new role-aligned Associate credential.

Existing credentials earned under retired certifications had their own validity period; retirement does not mean that a holder never earned the certification. But it also does not mean that new candidates can register for the same test today. AWS said the Data Analytics Specialty credential remained active for three years after earning it, while re-certification was no longer offered following retirement. A professional should verify the validity of their own badge in the AWS Certification portal and label historical credentials accurately on a profile.

The term big data describes data management challenges, not one required product stack. Datasets differ in size, velocity, formats, reliability expectations and query patterns. Hadoop and Spark are possible processing approaches, but they are not synonymous with data engineering. The difference between big data and Hadoop still matters when interpreting legacy training material: a small structured workload may not need a distributed computing framework, and a modern streaming workload may have different operational constraints from a batch-oriented archive.

Avoid treating a retired Specialty badge as a guaranteed salary increase or employer requirement. Hiring needs depend on the role, geography, business context and demonstrable experience. A reader who wants to work in data engineering should focus on a repeatable data pipeline, debugging and access controls. A reader who wants an active AWS exam should use the current issuer objectives and practice material. These goals are related, but neither can be achieved solely by memorizing the titles of old AWS services.

Use the current DEA-C01 domain structure to identify preparation gaps

The scored DEA-C01 domains carry different weights. Data Ingestion and Transformation accounts for 34%, followed by Data Store Management at 26%. Data Operations and Support is 22%; Data Security and Governance makes up the remaining 18%. Those are current Associate exam weights, not the retired BDS-C00 blueprint. Each domain addresses an aspect of turning inputs into usable, reliable data. A candidate should be ready to explain service trade-offs, trace a failed job, evaluate quality and choose a secure access path. Studying only one Glue or Redshift tutorial misses much of that responsibility.

The target candidate description recommends roughly two to three years of data-engineering work, with some hands-on AWS exposure. This is useful readiness context, not a stated registration prerequisite. A person with strong SQL skills may need additional practice in event streams and AWS identities; someone comfortable with Python scripts may need to learn managed warehouse design and operational monitoring. Make a matrix of tasks you can demonstrate independently versus those you have only watched in a video, then allocate time accordingly.

The active exam’s out-of-scope description also matters. Running machine-learning model training and inference is not a primary job task for this candidate profile. A pipeline can serve a machine-learning application, but exam study should not be dominated by training algorithms while ingestion, storage, lifecycle and governance remain weak. The AWS Data Engineer – Associate pathway is a more useful orientation for current candidates than legacy Big Data Specialty study notes.

AWS periodically updates exam guides as features and services evolve. Recheck the official revisions before booking or trusting an old percentages table. A service explanation can remain technically correct even when the test that originally motivated it is retired. Separate those two questions: what AWS service behavior is useful to understand, and what exam objectives are currently being assessed? That discipline prevents historical blog content from misdirecting a new candidate.

Build a single retail pipeline that demonstrates the core decisions

Imagine a retailer that receives daily store sales files and a stream of website session events. It needs a next-day conversion report with data that can be reconciled to source transactions. Start with small synthetic input files and explicitly named event fields such as order ID, event time, source and schema version. Determine which system owns the authoritative records, how late events should be handled and what a duplicate means. A dashboard that looks correct can still be wrong if orders are counted twice or missing events are ignored.

For batch ingestion, keep raw inputs in an appropriately restricted S3 location before applying transformations. A CSV export is easy to inspect, but a columnar output format such as Parquet can be more efficient for many analytical queries. Choose partitions from actual filter patterns rather than creating enormous numbers of tiny directories. A storage lifecycle policy should preserve any required audit or reprocessing window instead of deleting objects merely because a file has reached a certain age. Include the expected retrieval and transition behavior in the cost assessment.

An AWS Glue crawler can discover schema information, while the Data Catalog provides metadata for supported downstream tools. A transformation job should validate required columns, normalize timestamps and handle malformed records rather than blindly producing a successful status. The AWS Glue platform supports several processing and cataloging patterns, but the job’s correctness depends on the contract you write. Test an invalid date, an empty customer identifier and a changed source schema, then inspect whether each record is rejected, quarantined or transformed safely.

Website events may use Amazon Kinesis when ordered stream records, multiple consumers and replay within configured retention are valuable. A stream is not an indefinitely retained database; an interrupted consumer can fall behind and lose the oldest available records once they expire. Partition keys determine how the workload spreads across shards. For a simpler archive-to-storage path, a managed delivery service may remove the need for hand-written event consumers. Choose based on the use case rather than the number of components a diagram can show.

A traditional database source introduces a distinct choice. AWS DMS supports selected initial load and ongoing change-data-capture workflows, but it does not automatically translate every schema object or guarantee real-time CDC latency. If the retailer’s orders come from a transactional database, the team must define a migration or replication boundary, validate keys and rows, and understand when a transaction becomes visible downstream. Treat application cutover as a separate event from a stream consumer successfully writing its last batch.

Combine the batch files and website events only after defining join keys and time semantics. A session identifier, order identifier and timestamp might belong to different systems and have different retention rules. A deduplication rule should identify the same business event instead of discarding two distinct actions that happen to share a customer name. Record the source file or stream position from which each derived row came. This lineage helps an operator reconstruct a bad report after a bug is fixed.

Select analytical storage and query methods from real workload needs

Once data is clean, choose a query path according to its freshness, concurrency and data-layout requirements. Athena can query supported formats stored on S3 and may suit occasional exploratory reporting. A managed data warehouse such as Amazon Redshift can support curated analytical tables, frequent queries and warehouse-specific performance controls. It is inaccurate to declare that all data should be loaded into a warehouse or that S3 queries always cost less. Benchmark representative query patterns and account for storage, compute and operational maintenance.

For the retail report, a curated daily order table might contain an approved order status, location and timestamp, while the session table records visit IDs. Decide how cancellations affect reported revenue and whether a conversion is attached to the date of the session or date of the order. These are modeling questions that a cloud platform will not answer automatically. Verify row counts and a sample of expected results against the source, and make the report reproducible after a job is rerun.

Data stores have different authorization mechanisms and cost drivers. A Glue job role, an Athena query user and a warehouse reporting role should not all receive unrestricted access to the same raw customer data. Use appropriate encryption, identity policies and fine-grained governance mechanisms where supported. The ability to find a table in a catalog does not automatically grant permission to read every underlying sensitive object. Test access as the intended analyst rather than relying only on an administrator’s successful query.

A small prototype may not justify the most complex service. If a batch fits in an ordinary database and the user demand is modest, adding multiple streaming and processing layers can increase maintenance and failure modes. Conversely, as data and concurrency grow, partitioning, columnar layouts, stream backpressure and managed warehouse capabilities may matter much more. An exam scenario is easier to reason through when you identify which constraint is binding and which assumptions would make the recommended design change.

Operate and secure the pipeline before claiming exam readiness

Practical data engineering includes negative tests. Make a transformation encounter malformed JSON, intentionally deliver a record twice, and simulate a job that cannot reach its destination. Confirm that errors are observable, retries are bounded and valid records are not silently lost. An event ID or conditional write can help make replay idempotent. Keep a recovery path for quarantined data and decide who approves reprocessing. A pipeline that runs only while everything works is not complete.

Measure freshness, completeness and business accuracy as well as infrastructure activity. Service metrics may show a successful Glue job and low error rates while a report has the wrong order count. Monitor expected input totals, rejected records, processing lag and time since the last successful output. Use CloudWatch and supported service diagnostics to identify where a delay originated. A delayed source, slow transformation and warehouse query bottleneck require different fixes.

Orchestrate processing stages so downstream reports do not run against an incomplete upstream dataset. A suitable schedule, event trigger or managed workflow can coordinate dependencies, retries and failures. Step Functions and managed Airflow offerings solve different problems, and a simple pipeline may not need either. Keep the workflow readable and preserve a state that explains which stage completed. After a failure, an operator should know whether to retry a single task or rebuild all derived output.

Security and governance are part of each stage. Separate source and curated data, use roles with scoped access, encrypt sensitive material where appropriate and record changes to infrastructure or permissions. Avoid storing access keys in notebooks, job parameters or exported training examples. A data quality process should also address personally identifiable information, retention and approved consumers. The exact service selection matters less than demonstrating that the data cannot be read or modified by an unintended principal.

Turn the archived title into an accurate current learning path

Build a study matrix from the latest DEA-C01 task statements. For every objective, record one small working experiment, one meaningful failure you can reproduce and a trade-off you can explain. The retail example supports ingestion and transformation, storage and modeling, operations, and governance. After completing it, take a current issuer practice assessment and investigate incorrect answers through the applicable AWS docs. Do not rely on BDS-C00 questions to evaluate readiness for a different Associate exam.

A reasonable learning sequence is to set up an authorized AWS lab with budget controls, create a batch S3-to-Glue-to-query path, add a short event stream, implement data-quality validation, and then test recovery and identity restrictions. Track configuration, dataset versions and cleanup instructions so the experiment can be repeated. Do not claim a pipeline is production-ready simply because its console status is green. Explain its data ownership and failure behavior in a short technical report.

AWS retired Big Data – Specialty on July 1, 2020, then retired Data Analytics – Specialty on April 8, 2024. Those dates are historical facts, not current exam availability notices. The useful learning outcome is a secure, observable data pipeline; the correct exam decision is based on an active certification’s official blueprint. Retain the distinction when sharing an older course, article or professional badge so new learners are not directed toward unavailable registrations or outdated promises.

Exam status, November 2026: AWS Certified Big Data – Specialty (BDS-C00) retired on July 1, 2020.
