AB-900 helps an administrator support a governed AI-enabled Microsoft 365 environment. AB-620 builds and integrates agents. AB-410 builds broader AI-powered business applications and automation. AB-100 makes architecture decisions across multiple products, teams, risks, and business outcomes.

AB-900 is the administration foundation

Microsoft 365 Certified: Copilot and Agent Administration Fundamentals is beginner-level. The candidate should understand Microsoft 365 core services, identity/access, data protection, governance, Copilot, and agents, plus the main administration centers used across Exchange, SharePoint, Teams, Entra, and Purview.

The assessed areas focus on core Microsoft 365 objects/services, data protection/governance for Copilot, and basic administrative tasks for Copilot and agents. It is not a developer credential.

AB-620 is the enterprise agent-builder role

The AI Agent Builder Associate is for professional developers or advanced builders who create, extend, and integrate scalable agents with Copilot Studio, Power Platform, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Foundry, Dataverse, Power Fx, and enterprise systems.

Current assessed areas are planning/configuring agent solutions, integrating/extending agents in Copilot Studio, and testing/managing agents. The role owns the agent as a production solution rather than simply administering who may use it.

AB-410 is broader than agent building

The Intelligent Applications Builder Associate validates the ability to build AI-powered solutions in Microsoft Power Platform using Copilot, natural-language prompts, low-code tools, Dataverse, Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages, and AI Hub. Current domains cover the intelligent-app foundation, application creation, and business logic/automation.

Agents are part of the ecosystem, but the center of gravity is the business application: data model, app experience, prompts/models, flows, business rules, and automation.

AB-100 is an architecture credential

The Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert is aimed at solution architects who design end-to-end agentic AI business solutions. Microsoft describes the role as making the most of AI apps/services and business-application tools to drive innovation while coordinating architecture, governance, adoption, security, integration, and delivery.

AB-100 is not simply a more difficult agent-builder exam. It asks whether the candidate can translate enterprise requirements into a solution architecture and guide delivery across specialist teams.

The levels are intentionally different

AB-900 is beginner. AB-620 and AB-410 are intermediate associate credentials. AB-100 is expert and sits above an associate-level prerequisite path for the certification. That level difference changes the expected answer: fundamentals identify capabilities; associates implement; the expert architect makes trade-offs and orchestrates the whole solution.

This is why treating the AB series as a numeric ladder can be misleading.

AB-620 and AB-410 overlap around Copilot Studio

Both roles can touch agents. AB-620 goes deeper into planning, integrating, extending, testing, and managing enterprise agents. AB-410 can create agents from Power Apps and use AI capabilities, but its broader mission is intelligent business applications, with major emphasis on Power Apps, Dataverse, prompts, flows, and business logic.

If the deliverable is primarily an agent, AB-620 is closer. If the deliverable is an AI-enhanced business app or workflow, AB-410 is closer.

AB-900 and AB-620 separate administration from creation

An AB-900 administrator needs to understand how Copilot/agents fit into Microsoft 365 security, identity, governance, data protection, and administrative controls. An AB-620 builder needs to design agent conversations, tools, integrations, multi-agent behavior, testing, and lifecycle.

One role protects and operates the environment; the other creates the agent solution inside that governed environment.

AB-100 requires breadth across specialist roles

Microsoft’s current AB-100 expert certification accepts several associate certifications as prerequisites, including AI-103, AI-300, AB-620, AB-410, and various Dynamics 365 developer/consultant roles. That prerequisite structure signals that AB-100 assumes prior implementation depth somewhere in the Microsoft AI/business-app ecosystem.

The architect then needs to reason across that breadth rather than mastering every individual product configuration personally.

October 14 is a version boundary for parts of the portfolio

As of October 4, Microsoft has already published October 14 updates for AB-900 and AB-100. Current candidates should use the live pre-update objectives for an exam before that date and compare the new study guides if testing later. AB-620 and AB-410 remain active associate-role choices.

Version awareness matters because this portfolio is evolving quickly around Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents, Foundry, and Power Platform.

Choose by what you are accountable for

Choose AB-900 if you support and govern Copilot/agents in Microsoft 365; AB-620 if you build enterprise agents; AB-410 if you build intelligent Power Platform applications and automation; AB-100 if you design the end-to-end agentic business solution and guide delivery across teams.

AB-900’s Microsoft 365 emphasis is a useful boundary. The administrator needs to know core objects such as users, groups, teams, sites, and libraries plus identity, Conditional Access, data protection, and governance because Copilot and agents inherit the permissions and information architecture of the tenant. Good administration therefore begins before the AI experience is switched on.

AB-620 assumes a much more builder-oriented starting point. Microsoft expects familiarity with Power Fx, Dataverse, Power Platform environments, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Foundry, and adaptive cards. The role is not simply creating a conversational script; it is integrating the agent with business systems and making its behavior scalable, testable, and supportable.

AB-410 sits between low-code solution design and AI application development. Its current blueprint includes data modeling, environment/ALM choices, model-driven and canvas apps, prompts and models in AI Hub, cloud flows, business rules, business process flows, and reusable components. The agent can be one feature inside a broader application.

AB-100 moves the conversation from component design to enterprise architecture. An architect needs to decide which Microsoft AI and business-application services should be used, how identity and data boundaries work, which team owns each component, how agents integrate with systems of record, and how the whole solution will be governed after launch.

The security perspective changes with level. AB-900 recognizes tenant controls and safe administration. AB-620 must control what an agent can know and do, including tool permissions, Dataverse access, connector use, and testing. AB-410 must protect application data and automation. AB-100 must make sure those controls form one coherent architecture across business domains.

Testing depth also changes. AB-900 should understand that agents need governance and operational oversight. AB-620 owns agent testing, evaluation, and management directly. AB-410 tests app and flow behavior as part of an intelligent business solution. AB-100 defines quality, risk, acceptance, and rollout expectations across multiple solution components.

Dataverse is another overlap point. AB-620 can use it as agent context or action data; AB-410 treats it as a primary application data platform; AB-100 may choose where Dataverse fits into an enterprise architecture. AB-900 only needs enough awareness to understand how Copilot/agent administration intersects with Microsoft 365 and governed data.

Power Automate appears differently too. An AB-620 agent can invoke flows as tools. AB-410 uses cloud flows as a major business-automation capability. AB-100 decides whether flow-based orchestration, custom services, agents, or other integration patterns best meet the enterprise requirement. Same service, different ownership level.

Licensing and operating model become more important at architecture level. An agent prototype can be impressive while being difficult to license, secure, monitor, or scale across thousands of users. AB-100 expects the candidate to surface those trade-offs early; AB-620 and AB-410 implement within the resulting constraints.

A useful selection exercise is to imagine an HR service agent. AB-900 administers tenant access and governance around the experience. AB-620 builds the agent and tools. AB-410 might build the supporting Power App and approval workflows. AB-100 designs the end-to-end employee-service architecture, integration, security, rollout, and ownership model.

Microsoft’s October 14 updates for AB-900 and AB-100 also show how quickly the portfolio is changing. Candidates should freeze objectives to their exam date and avoid using code similarity as a proxy for difficulty. The most stable way to choose is still the job role: administrator, builder, intelligent-app developer, or architect.

The build-versus-govern distinction becomes especially clear with agent tools. AB-900 needs awareness that tools can expand what an agent can access or change and therefore must be governed. AB-620 implements those tools and integration paths. AB-410 may expose AI capabilities inside apps and flows. AB-100 decides which tool architecture, identity, data source, and approval model is acceptable for the business process.

Adoption responsibility also rises with level. AB-900 can support administrators who enable or protect Copilot experiences. AB-620 and AB-410 focus on building useful solutions for defined users. AB-100 has to consider whether the organization can operate, support, secure, fund, and evolve the resulting portfolio after the first successful deployment.

Another useful distinction is where the candidate spends most time: admin centers and policy for AB-900; Copilot Studio and integrations for AB-620; Power Apps/Dataverse/flows/AI Hub for AB-410; workshops, requirements, architecture diagrams, governance decisions, and cross-team design reviews for AB-100. The working surface often reveals the intended role more clearly than the exam code.

These credentials can also coexist on one project. A tenant administrator may establish the governed Copilot environment, an agent builder creates the agent and tools, an intelligent-app builder adds the Power Platform application and automation, and the solution architect defines the end-to-end architecture, integration, security, rollout, and ownership. The overlap is collaborative rather than redundant.

Within the broader Microsoft certification portfolio, these are complementary role boundaries rather than four versions of the same exam.

Microsoft’s current AI-business-solutions certifications use similar AB exam codes but target very different jobs.
