Employers need someone who can keep workloads correctly configured, restrict access without breaking operations, diagnose failures from evidence and explain the effect of changes to developers, security colleagues and business owners. Passing an exam can demonstrate relevant knowledge, but a hiring decision also depends on whether that knowledge transfers to the environment the team actually operates.

Microsoft AZ-104 Exam covers implementing, managing and monitoring Azure identities and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking and operational resources. Those skills appear under several job titles: Azure administrator, cloud operations engineer, infrastructure engineer, platform operations specialist and cloud support engineer. The titles overlap, but the hiring evidence that matters changes with the responsibility of the position.

Look past the job title to its operating responsibility

Two vacancies can both say “Azure administrator” while describing different work. One organization needs a person to maintain a small set of virtual machines and storage accounts. Another runs containerized services across subscriptions with infrastructure-as-code, policy controls, centralized logging and strict recovery expectations. The second role may require broader automation and incident-management experience even when both employers mention the same certification.

Read the responsibilities before treating a technology list as a set of prerequisites. Does the team expect independent on-call decisions, changes reviewed by senior engineers, or work limited to requests within a documented standard? Does the role support developers who deploy applications, a central platform team or internal business users? Is compliance work handled by another department or part of the cloud engineer’s duties?

A candidate can assess fit by selecting three representative tasks from the advertisement and preparing evidence that they could perform them safely. For an early-career support role, supervised investigation and accurate escalation may be more important than designing an enterprise hub-and-spoke architecture. For a platform role, the employer may expect reproducible deployments, reliable observability and clear blast-radius control.

Cloud administration means maintaining the intended state

Day-to-day administration includes more than creating a resource group, VM or network interface. An operator maintains identity permissions, reviews policy exceptions, monitors capacity, investigates degraded services, manages backup and restoration procedures, and checks whether a configuration change had its intended effect. The work involves existing resources whose state can drift from the desired configuration.

Consider a fictional logistics company migrating its warehouse order service to Azure. The administrator must verify that the deployment identity can make the required changes, storage remains accessible only through approved paths, and operations staff can observe failures without viewing unnecessary customer data. A successful template deployment is a checkpoint, not the end of the operational responsibility.

For hiring evidence, record a configuration’s declared purpose, its effective state and the result of a controlled positive and negative test. Use Azure Resource Manager or suitable infrastructure-as-code to make intended settings reviewable. A portfolio that only shows a created resource does not demonstrate how the candidate would detect or reverse a bad change.

Identity and governance are usually shared responsibilities

Administrators may configure or troubleshoot Microsoft Entra identities and Azure RBAC, but they are not automatically the final authority for enterprise security policy. A platform team may implement roles at subscription or resource-group scope while a security team approves standing privileges and a business owner decides whether an exception is acceptable. The job description should make these boundaries clear.

In an interview exercise, imagine an employee whose Azure portal sign-in works but whose deployment is denied. A good candidate asks whether the denial came from a missing role assignment, Azure Policy or a resource-state requirement. They do not immediately recommend making the employee an Owner of the subscription. The ability to locate the correct enforcement point is more persuasive than reciting every built-in role.

A mature operator can explain management-plane permissions versus application data-plane access. If a workload cannot read an object from a storage account, adding a role to the human employee may not help when the application uses a separate managed identity. The employer needs someone who can find and validate the identity actually involved.

Troubleshooting is a strong signal of job readiness

A cloud support or operations role often begins with symptoms rather than instructions. “The site is unavailable” may represent a network path, authentication, application or dependency failure. A useful analyst records the expected transaction, establishes a timeline, distinguishes facts from hypotheses and makes a narrowly justified correction with a rollback option.

Take the logistics service. After a storage network change, some warehouses cannot retrieve shipping labels. A candidate who immediately opens all storage firewall rules may restore connectivity while violating a security requirement. A stronger candidate tests name resolution and the effective private endpoint path from the failing workload, checks data-plane authorization and compares working and failing locations.

The separate AZ-104 troubleshooting topic is relevant because the same evidence-led thinking makes on-call work dependable: establish what should have happened, locate the failing layer, test a correction and verify that unauthorized paths are still blocked.

Employers also value clear escalation. If the root cause lies in an application database query or a provider-controlled service incident, the administrator should communicate the evidence collected and the affected scope instead of claiming sole responsibility for every Azure-related fault.

Automation becomes important as resource estates grow

A small environment can be maintained partly through the Azure portal. A larger estate needs reproducible configuration, source review, controlled identity, tested changes and monitoring of drift. PowerShell, Azure CLI, Bicep or Azure Resource Manager templates can help translate approved intent into consistent deployments. A hiring manager may ask how a candidate would make a change across several subscriptions without manually clicking the same setting repeatedly.

Show one well-scoped automation example rather than a collection of untested scripts. A script that enumerates resource groups and reports missing tags can be safer and more useful than a script with unrestricted write permissions. Explain its authentication method, permissions, error handling, expected output and how a reviewer knows it did not change resources unintentionally.

For state-changing automation, demonstrate dry-run or plan behavior where available, an approval path, meaningful logs and the ability to restore a prior configuration. An engineer should understand that an infrastructure template can deploy correctly while the application still fails at runtime; automation and operational verification are complementary.

Monitoring should answer a real business question

Many Azure job advertisements ask for monitoring experience. The strongest portfolio evidence is not a screenshot of a dashboard but an explanation of which failure it detects. A CPU metric can indicate resource pressure, while application telemetry may be required to identify failed checkouts or delayed warehouse events. The operator must understand the difference.

Use Azure Monitor to develop a small synthetic-service test: generate one known failure, find the corresponding record, explain how a useful alert would trigger and identify a reasonable response. Note which failures the measurement could not detect. A convincing operations candidate can describe both what an alert proves and what remains uncertain.

Retention, access control and cost matter too. Centralized logs can contain personal data and may be expensive if collected indiscriminately. The operator should know who needs access, which fields support investigation and what the organization requires for retention. Practical skill includes controlling the cost and security of the observability system itself.

Recovery and cost decisions reveal operational maturity

Availability and disaster recovery are not automatic properties of deploying to a cloud provider. A reliable administrator can distinguish scaling, redundancy, backup and restoration, and relate them to downtime and data-loss tolerances. An environment with healthy backups may still fail restoration because encryption keys, identity or dependent network configuration are unavailable.

In a controlled project, create synthetic data, preserve a recovery point, perform a restoration and verify that an authorized application can use it. Record the elapsed time and any missing dependencies. A recruiter may understand “configured backup” as basic experience; an engineer who can explain a tested restoration has stronger evidence.

Cost is another operating constraint. Resources left running, overly broad log ingestion, unused public IPs or inappropriate storage tiers can create avoidable spending. A candidate should be able to identify the source of a cost increase, suggest a reversible measure and explain what performance or resiliency requirement the change could affect. Cost optimization is not the instruction to select the cheapest possible resource in every scenario.

Prepare a portfolio that a technical interviewer can challenge

A useful portfolio might contain three projects: one governed deployment with scoped permissions and policy tests; one network or storage incident with a clear timeline and verified correction; and one monitoring-and-recovery exercise with observable outcomes. Use synthetic data, authorized subscriptions, explicit cost controls and cleanup records. Each case needs a short problem statement, implementation, evidence, risk and limitation.

Expect follow-up questions. Why did a policy deny a deployment even though the operator had a suitable role? How did you establish that a private endpoint was actually used? What would happen if the backup could not be decrypted? Why did you choose that alert rather than a generic availability signal? A strong candidate can reason through altered requirements rather than depend on a memorized demonstration.

Include collaboration evidence where available. A change record that states what another team approved, what was escalated and which rollback condition was agreed can demonstrate more professional readiness than a complex unsupervised experiment. Real cloud administration is collaborative, even when a person performs much of the hands-on work.

Interpret AZ-104 as evidence, not a universal employment guarantee

Azure Administrator Associate is an intermediate role-based certification. Microsoft recommends familiarity with operating systems, networking, servers, virtualization and administration tools. The credential helps an employer understand the scope of knowledge being assessed, but it does not promise a specific salary, job level or independent authority to operate every Azure environment.

A person moving from help desk or on-premises infrastructure may seek a supervised cloud-support position; a seasoned systems engineer may aim for broader platform operations. Both can benefit from AZ-104, but the appropriate role depends on past experience, workplace demands and the ability to demonstrate relevant work. The next specialization after AZ-104 is a separate career decision, not something that follows automatically from earning the certificate.

When evaluating an offer or preparing for a technical interview, ask which changes the role may authorize, which systems it supports, what evidence is expected during incidents and how the team reviews risky work. Those questions define the job more accurately than its title. An Azure career grows through accountable operational decisions that the candidate can explain, test and improve—not through collecting an isolated list of cloud service names.

An Azure Administrator job is not defined by how many services a candidate can name.
