3I0-012 is another historical identifier associated with the ACI Dealing Certificate. The active program is now the ACI Dealing Certificate New Version, exam 002-101. ACI states that the previous version expired on March 31, 2021, so 3I0-012 should not be treated as a currently bookable exam simply because third-party question collections still circulate under that code.
The useful question is not whether every old objective disappeared. It did not. Foreign exchange, money markets, interest rates, derivatives, calculation discipline and professional conduct remain central to entry-level financial-markets competence. What changed is the organization of the syllabus, the surrounding market environment and some of the conventions candidates are expected to know.
The earlier 3I0-008 ACI Dealing Certificate and historical ACI Operations Certificate help show how the catalog evolved. Both belong to the broader ACI certification exams family. Current study and booking, however, should follow ACI FMA's present 002-series exams.
The Dealing Certificate New Version is structured around Financial Markets Environment, Foreign Exchange, Rates, FICC Derivatives and Financial Markets Applications. ACI currently describes a 70-question, two-hour computer-based exam. That structure is more useful for 2026 planning than any old 3I0-012 topic numbering found in historical material.
The five areas are not isolated silos. A forward FX trade combines spot quotation, interest-rate differentials, day-count conventions and settlement mechanics. An interest-rate future sits inside the rates topic but also requires an understanding of market applications, margining and position risk. Conduct questions can appear around any product.
Study therefore works best when candidates build relationships between topics. If a legacy question looks unfamiliar, first identify which current basket it belongs to and which economic idea it tests. That translation process makes old material far more valuable.
Before calculating a price, candidates should know who participates in the market and why. Dealers, brokers, central banks, asset managers, corporates, hedge funds, clearing houses and infrastructure providers interact for different reasons. Liquidity provision, hedging, investment, funding and policy operations can produce similar-looking trades with different motivations.
Market structure also influences risk. An exchange-traded contract has standardized terms and central clearing features that differ from a bilateral over-the-counter transaction. Settlement conventions, collateral arrangements and documentation affect how credit and operational risk are managed even when the economic exposure looks similar.
This context matters when studying legacy material because some old questions focus narrowly on product definitions. Modern preparation should add the surrounding market function: how the instrument is quoted, who uses it, where risk is transferred and what controls support the trade lifecycle.
Foreign exchange is easier to master as one connected pricing system. Spot establishes the immediate exchange relationship. Forward points reflect the interest-rate differential over time. FX swaps combine near and far exchanges and are widely used for liquidity and funding management. Cross rates connect currency pairs when a direct quotation is not the starting point.
The candidate should be comfortable moving between dealer language and economic meaning. Bid and offer depend on whose perspective is being quoted. A premium or discount in forward points must be applied in the correct direction. A swap is not simply two unrelated trades; its near and far legs are economically connected.
When an old 3I0-012 question provides a quotation convention, preserve that convention for the calculation. When it depends on a benchmark or market practice that has changed, replace the historical detail with the current ACI syllabus rather than memorizing the obsolete version.
Money-market and interest-rate questions become clearer when each instrument is reduced to dated cash flows. A deposit has principal and interest. A discount instrument is purchased below redemption value. An FRA produces a settlement linked to the difference between contracted and observed rates. A swap exchanges streams under agreed conventions.
Once the cash flows are visible, day count and discounting have a purpose instead of becoming arbitrary formulas. The candidate can ask which dates matter, what annual basis applies and whether the result should be a present value, future value, yield or price.
Yield and price relationships are another recurring theme. For fixed cash flows, higher market yields generally imply lower present values. A candidate who understands that direction can reject impossible answers before completing the exact calculation.
FICC derivatives cover fixed income, currencies and commodities, but the same reasoning pattern works across the set. Identify the underlying risk, determine the payoff of the derivative and check whether the proposed position offsets or increases the original exposure.
Futures introduce standardized contracts, margining and daily settlement. Options introduce asymmetric rights and the distinction between holder and writer. Swaps transform streams of cash flows. The exam may test definitions, calculations or scenario judgment, but the economic logic should remain visible throughout.
Legacy question banks often reward recognition of a formula. Current preparation should go further. Explain why the formula has the sign it does, what happens when the market variable moves and which party benefits from that movement.
A professional dealer is part of a larger process. Trades must be captured, confirmed, settled and reconciled. Limits must be observed. Exceptions need escalation. Information must be handled according to policy and applicable market standards. These operational disciplines are not separate from dealing competence; they make dealing activity reliable.
Front office, middle office and operations also have different responsibilities. A control is weakened when the person taking risk can independently confirm or settle the same transaction without oversight. Understanding functional separation helps candidates interpret both market-application and conduct scenarios.
This is also where the legacy Dealing and Operations pages connect. The Dealing Certificate focuses on market-facing product competence, while the old 3I0-013 Operations material points toward the processing and control environment that completes transactions.
Interest-rate markets have changed substantially since many older question sets were written. Reference-rate reforms altered the benchmarks used in multiple currencies and products. A candidate who memorizes a historical benchmark relationship without checking the present syllabus can carry obsolete assumptions into the current exam.
Build a current benchmark table from ACI material. Record the relevant overnight or term rate, the currency, the market convention and where the rate appears in products. Update the table when the official syllabus changes. This is safer than relying on a static third-party question archive.
The same principle applies to exchange-traded contracts and product conventions. A legacy question may still teach a useful pricing method while naming an instrument or benchmark that is no longer central. Separate the mathematical idea from the dated label.
ACI’s current education framework connects exams with the FX Global Code and other relevant industry standards. Conduct is therefore not a final chapter to memorize after the products. It should be considered whenever a scenario involves pricing, information, communication, conflicts, order handling or trade execution.
Ask whether the action is transparent, appropriately authorized and consistent with fair market behavior. Consider whether confidential information is protected and whether the decision would survive independent review. Technical knowledge without disciplined conduct is incomplete professional competence.
Legacy material can still present useful ethical situations, but candidates should resolve them using current standards. If an old answer conflicts with modern market-practice guidance, the current standard wins.
One useful way to test readiness is to explain a trade in plain language before touching a calculator. For an FX forward, describe which currency is being bought, which is being sold, why forward points exist and which cash flows occur at maturity. For an FRA, describe the exposure being hedged and why the settlement changes when the reference rate moves. If the explanation is unclear, the formula is probably being used by memory rather than understanding.
Also practice interpreting market data rather than treating every number as an input. A quotation may contain information that is irrelevant to the requested calculation, and some questions require choosing the correct side of a market rather than using every displayed figure. Reading discipline is part of dealing competence because real markets present more information than any one transaction needs.
Begin by downloading the current ACI Dealing Certificate New Version syllabus and creating a five-column study map for its five topic baskets. Then classify each useful 3I0-012 question under one of those columns. Questions that do not map cleanly should be investigated rather than forced into the plan.
Next, label every legacy question as durable, update-required or obsolete. Durable questions test concepts such as quotation direction, cash-flow logic or option payoffs. Update-required questions use a concept that remains relevant but contain an old benchmark or convention. Obsolete questions depend on an exam structure or rule that no longer applies.
This approach preserves the value of historical practice without allowing it to control the study plan. The current 002-101 syllabus defines what matters now; 3I0-012 is simply one older source that can help reinforce parts of that knowledge.
