Avaya 77200X: Legacy IP Office Integration

77200X, Avaya IP Office Platform Basic Integration and Configuration Exam, is a retired Avaya exam. Avaya’s 2022 IP Office curriculum update replaced it with 77201X, the newer IP Office Platform Implement Certified Exam, and set April 30, 2022 as the last delivery date for 77200X.

The history continues beyond that first replacement. 77201X was itself retired during Avaya’s 2025 move away from proctored ACIS/ACSS exams and mapped to the 77202T online test. The same-era support side is represented by 78200X, while the later 78201X generation shows how IP Office support moved forward. Avaya certifications provide the broader vendor context.

That two-step history is essential for 2026 readers. 77200X material can still explain IP Office implementation fundamentals, but it must not be presented as either a current exam or the immediate predecessor of today’s assessment model without mentioning the later 2025 transition.

Begin with the IP Office deployment role and site requirements

IP Office implementations vary widely. A small single-site system, a multisite business and an environment integrated with external applications may use the same product family but impose different design requirements.

Document user counts, locations, endpoint types, trunk services, numbering, remote users, applications and resilience expectations before configuring the system. The purpose is to establish which features and capacities the deployment actually needs.

Keep the design grounded in the installed release and hardware. Historical certification examples can illustrate concepts, but supported capacities, licenses and interfaces can change between IP Office generations.

Build a numbering plan that can grow without collisions

A clean numbering plan makes administration and troubleshooting easier. Define extension ranges, hunt groups, short codes, external prefixes and site identifiers with future growth in mind.

Normalize numbers consistently. Users may dial local, national or international formats, while trunks and applications may expect a different representation. Document where transformation occurs so that a failed call can be traced rather than guessed at.

Multisite environments need particular care. Extension ranges and location codes should avoid ambiguity, and emergency dialing must be validated for each site under current local requirements.

Configure trunks as controlled external boundaries

IP Office can connect to service providers and other systems through different trunk technologies. Regardless of type, the implementation should document addressing, capacity, number presentation, authentication or signaling requirements, and expected failure behavior.

Test representative inbound and outbound calls. Include caller ID, transfers, busy conditions and destinations that use different route rules. If alternate routes exist, test the trigger that selects them.

Trunks are also security boundaries. Restrict exposure to required peers and ports, protect credentials and avoid permissive rules that make troubleshooting easy at the cost of unnecessary attack surface.

Treat users, extensions and groups as separate configuration concepts

An employee identity, a physical or soft endpoint, and a group destination are related but not identical. Keeping those concepts separate reduces confusion when devices are replaced, extensions are reassigned or users work from multiple locations.

Document which settings belong to the user and which belong to the endpoint. Test login, voicemail or messaging association, calling permissions and group membership with representative accounts.

Group behavior should be tested under multiple agent or member states. A hunt group that works when everyone is idle may behave very differently when members are busy, unavailable or logged out.

Use short codes and routing rules deliberately

IP Office routing can become difficult to maintain when short codes and route rules accumulate without a clear naming or documentation standard. Each rule should express a real business requirement.

Before creating a new rule, check whether an existing pattern already matches the number. Overlapping patterns can send calls down unexpected paths and make later troubleshooting difficult.

Keep test cases for important routes. A small table showing user input, expected normalized number, selected trunk and expected destination gives administrators a repeatable way to validate changes.

Voicemail and automated-attendant behavior should be treated as part of the call design rather than as an accessory. Confirm coverage rules, mailbox ownership, greetings, message retrieval and any menu options that transfer callers back into the dial plan. A working main number can still deliver a poor customer experience if after-hours or unanswered-call behavior is wrong.

Where applications integrate with IP Office, record the interface and the operational owner. Contact-center software, recording, directory synchronization or third-party applications may depend on specific extensions, APIs or network paths. Testing only ordinary handset calls can miss those dependencies.

Plan remote access around identity, security and media

Remote users introduce additional dependencies: public DNS, certificates, firewalls, NAT, secure signaling and media paths. An endpoint can authenticate successfully and still experience one-way audio or failed calls if media addressing is wrong.

Test from an actual external network rather than only from the office. Confirm service discovery, login, incoming calls, outgoing calls, transfers and audio in both directions.

Certificate names and expiry should be tracked operationally. A remote-access service can fail suddenly when a certificate expires even though the IP Office configuration itself has not changed.

Software and endpoint compatibility should be captured in the build record. A deployment can contain desk phones, soft clients, gateways and application modules that follow different firmware or release requirements. Before upgrading one component, confirm that the resulting combination is supported and that rollback is possible if the change affects registration or feature behavior.

Time and name services are simple but critical dependencies. Ensure that IP Office, connected applications and management systems use reliable DNS and NTP sources. Consistent time makes call records, logs and security events easier to correlate when support investigates a problem later.

Back up configuration before treating the system as complete

Configuration backup is part of implementation, not merely a support task. Store a known-good copy after the system passes acceptance testing and again before major changes.

Document the restore process and any dependencies outside the main configuration file. Voicemail, application data, certificates or external integrations may require separate protection.

A backup is only useful if administrators know where it is, how recent it is and how to validate the system after restoration. Include those details in the handoff.

Administrative security belongs in the handoff as well. Use named accounts where the product supports them, restrict management access to trusted networks and document emergency credentials separately from routine administration. Service-provider credentials and SIP secrets should not be copied casually into general project notes.

Capacity should be reviewed before go-live and then monitored in production. Trunk channels, user licenses, voicemail storage and system resources can all become constraints as the business grows. Recording the original assumptions makes it easier to recognize when a later performance problem is really a capacity problem.

Validate the site with operational acceptance tests

Acceptance testing should cover the user journeys that matter to the business: internal calls, inbound and outbound trunks, transfer, group routing, voicemail, remote users and any important application integration.

Also test abnormal conditions. Remove or disable a preferred trunk where safe and verify the intended fallback. Confirm what happens outside business hours. Test a user without permission for a restricted call so that access controls are proven, not assumed.

Record results with the configuration baseline. If a later change creates a problem, support can compare current behavior with a documented known-good state.

Change management should protect the baseline after handoff. Before editing a trunk, short code, group or user-rights object, record the reason, previous value and expected outcome. Test neighboring call scenarios after the change because a broad rule can affect more users than the original ticket suggests.

When troubleshooting, use call records, traces and exact timestamps instead of relying on memory. A failed external call can be followed from user input through normalization, route choice and trunk signaling. That evidence helps distinguish an IP Office configuration problem from a service-provider rejection or a downstream destination issue.

Follow 77200X through both the 2022 and 2025 transitions

Avaya’s 2022 notice clearly replaced 77200X with 77201X. That newer exam covered the updated IP Office Platform implementation curriculum, but it did not remain current indefinitely.

In the 2025 credential restructuring, Avaya retired 77201X and identified 77202T as the new online implementation test. The support side underwent the same kind of migration, with 78201X giving way to 78202T.

For 2026 readers, the correct lesson is to follow the entire timeline. Use 77200X for durable IP Office ideas such as numbering, trunks, users, groups, remote access, backup and validation. Use current Avaya training resources for the live credential and the exact release being deployed.

For sites that still run an older IP Office generation, preserve the original numbering plan, trunk map, backup history and acceptance tests. Those records support both day-to-day troubleshooting and any future migration to a newer communications platform.

That evidence also improves vendor escalation. A support case with the exact called number, route, trunk, timestamp, software version and recent-change history is far more actionable than a general report that outside calls fail.

The same evidence should be carried into migration planning. Record which numbering ranges, site routes, trunk behaviors, user groups and integrated applications are business requirements rather than historical implementation accidents. The replacement team can then preserve the behaviors that matter without reproducing obsolete design choices simply because they were present in the old system.
