AD0-E137 AEM Sites Developer Expert: Preparing Across Development, Deployment and Maintenance

AD0-E137 is Adobe’s current AEM Sites Developer Expert exam. Adobe classifies it at Expert level for candidates with one to three years of experience and describes a minimum profile with at least twelve months of AEM work. The official exam structure gives the largest share to AEM development at 33%, followed by build and deployment at 25%, configurations at 24% and environment maintenance at 18%. Those weights make the role broader than “write components.”

The exam sits inside the current Adobe certification exams portfolio and supersedes the practical study focus of older developer identifiers such as AD0-E134. Candidates should prepare against current AEM patterns: supported component development, OSGi configuration, templates and Content Fragment Models, Maven builds, workflows, indexing, release management and environment operations.

Adobe currently lists AD0-E137 as a 50-question exam with a passing score of 32 and a time limit of one hour and forty minutes. The best preparation is to turn the objective areas into one connected development lifecycle instead of studying four isolated buckets.

Configuration questions test whether environments can differ safely

Configuration accounts for 24% of the official objective weighting. Candidates should understand how AEM behavior is controlled without hard-coding environment-specific values. OSGi settings, endpoint configuration and service behavior need clear ownership so the same application can move across environments predictably.

The configuration domain also reaches beyond Java services. Adobe’s current scope includes Dispatcher rules, multi-tenancy considerations, SAML or LDAP integration, replication agents and authoring structures such as editable templates and Content Fragment Models. The common theme is controlled platform behavior.

Study these topics by asking where a change belongs. If a public request must be allowed, that may involve Dispatcher. If authors need a new controlled page structure, editable-template policy may be the right layer. If an external identity provider changes, authentication configuration matters. Correct layer selection is more important than memorizing a console path.

Editable templates and Content Fragment Models deserve hands-on practice because they connect configuration with development. A developer may not own the business taxonomy, but should understand how template policies constrain components and how model changes affect existing content and consuming applications. A change that is syntactically valid can still be disruptive if it removes an expected field or permits inconsistent authoring across sites.

Multi-tenancy adds another design constraint. Shared environments need clear boundaries for configuration, content roots, permissions and reusable code so one site or tenant cannot accidentally depend on another's private structure. Scenario questions are easier when candidates think in terms of isolation and controlled sharing rather than treating multi-tenancy as a single product switch.

Component development should remain clean from dialog to rendering

The 33% AEM development domain includes building components with HTL, Sling Models and services. Candidates need to take a real authoring requirement and divide it into dialog fields, content properties, server-side preparation and presentation without pushing every responsibility into one class.

HTL should remain presentation-focused. Sling Models can adapt content into a view model, while OSGi services provide reusable capabilities or integrations. This separation supports unit testing and makes components easier to change when authoring requirements evolve.

Developers should also understand modern rendering patterns such as SPA or exporter-based delivery where applicable. The underlying principle is consistent: content and business logic should expose a stable representation that a consumer can use without depending on internal repository implementation details.

Testing and mocking reveal whether code depends on accidental state

Adobe’s current scope explicitly includes unit tests and mock data. A testable component or service has clear inputs and dependencies. If a unit test requires a complete running AEM instance merely to verify a simple transformation, the design may be too tightly coupled.

AEM mocking frameworks can provide repository resources and request context for focused tests. Candidates should know why mock content should represent both normal and incomplete states. Older pages may lack newly added properties, so models need sensible optional handling rather than assuming every item was created after the latest release.

Tests are also part of deployment safety. A defect caught during an automated build is cheaper than one found after production release. Expert developers should connect testing decisions with the delivery pipeline rather than treating them as a separate quality activity.

Integrations need contracts, timeouts and clear failure behavior

Third-party API integration appears in the development domain because an AEM application often depends on external services. Candidates should reason about authentication, response mapping, timeouts, retries and what the user experiences when the remote system is slow or unavailable.

Synchronous calls on a rendering path deserve caution. If every page request waits for a remote API, that service becomes part of the page’s availability and latency. Caching, asynchronous synchronization or graceful fallback may be safer depending on freshness requirements.

Integration code belongs in reusable services rather than inside HTL or scattered component methods. This keeps credentials and transport logic away from presentation and gives the application one place to implement error handling and observability.

Repository queries and Oak indexes must be designed together

AD0-E137 expects developers to select appropriate JCR query approaches and work with custom Oak indexes. The key skill is not simply writing a query that returns data; it is ensuring the query can execute predictably against production-scale content.

Start with the access pattern. What properties are filtered or sorted? How frequently is the query executed? Could the content structure remove the need for a broad search? Once the need is clear, the developer can evaluate query and index design together.

Custom indexes should be deliberate because they have operational cost. An index that supports one critical repeated query may be justified; creating indexes reflexively for every query is not. Performance testing and query analysis should verify that the chosen solution actually addresses the workload.

Build and deployment knowledge is a quarter of the exam for a reason

The 25% build and deployment domain covers dependencies, Maven project structure, run-mode configuration, workflows and index deployment. Developers should understand how their source becomes a deployable artifact and which application changes require controlled promotion.

The discipline of CI/CD pipelines connects directly to this objective. Builds should be reproducible, automated tests should run consistently and deployment should not depend on undocumented manual changes to one environment.

Collaborate with the AEM DevOps Engineer Expert role when operational controls become the focus. The developer should still understand the pipeline well enough to provide correct artifacts, tests and configuration; DevOps should make promotion, environment validation and observability reliable.

Workflows need safe state transitions and appropriate scope

Workflows appear in deployment objectives but are also an application-development concern. Developers should know how workflow models and custom steps fit a business process, how payload state moves and what happens when a step fails or retries.

Side effects need caution. A step that sends an external request or modifies content should be designed so a retry does not create duplicate transactions. Correlation identifiers and explicit process state can make long-running workflows safer.

Not every automation problem needs a workflow. If a simple service or event handler solves the requirement with less state, that may be easier to maintain. Expert judgment includes choosing the platform mechanism that matches the lifecycle of the task.

Environment maintenance turns development knowledge into operational reliability

Environment maintenance carries 18% of the exam. Adobe’s current scope includes environment configuration, release management, Package Manager synchronization and maintenance tools. Developers therefore need enough operational awareness to understand how code behaves after it leaves the local machine.

Release management includes version discipline, compatibility and evidence that a change is safe to promote. A developer should be able to help diagnose why a package behaves differently in another environment and identify whether code, content, configuration or permissions are responsible.

Maintenance tools should be used with an understanding of impact. Cleanup or repository operations can affect system behavior and should not be performed casually in production. Expert candidates should know the purpose of these tools and when operational ownership or Adobe-managed service boundaries apply.

Prepare by mapping one project across all four objective domains

Choose a realistic AEM project and map it against the official weighting. Under configuration, document Dispatcher, authentication, templates and OSGi settings. Under development, identify components, Sling Models, services, tests and integrations. Under build and deployment, document Maven modules, workflows, indexes and pipeline behavior. Under maintenance, define release and troubleshooting procedures.

Then create scenario questions that cross domains. A new component needs an external API and a new public endpoint. What changes in code? What configuration changes? How is it tested? What Dispatcher rule changes? What pipeline evidence proves readiness? What monitoring would reveal a production failure? Cross-domain practice is closer to real expert work than memorizing objective bullets separately.

Finally, compare your preparation with the Professional-level AD0-E128 Sites Developer Professional foundation. If request resolution, components, Sling Models, templates and basic configuration are still uncertain, strengthen those first. AD0-E137 assumes that foundation and adds the judgment required to build, deploy and maintain AEM applications as reliable production systems.
