Android ATC is a separate certification provider from Google. That distinction matters because Google's Associate Android Developer exam has been retired, while Android ATC continues to publish its own training and certification pathway. The more difficult problem for candidates is versioning: Android ATC has used several exam-code generations, and older codes remain visible in study inventories even after the program has moved on.
still contains historical pages for AND-401, AND-402, and AND-403. Android ATC's current Exams page instead says that the Android Certified Application Engineer requires AND-X01, AND-X20, and AND-X30, with AND-400 used for the trainer pathway. The old pages can still support concept review, but the current Android ATC site must control what a new candidate actually schedules.
| Current code | Published focus | Role in the pathway |
|---|---|---|
| AND-X01 | Android application development | Application Engineer requirement |
| AND-X20 | Android Security Essentials | Application Engineer requirement |
| AND-X30 | Android application UI/UX design and monetization | Application Engineer requirement |
| AND-400 | Training skills | Trainer requirement after the Application Engineer exams |
This published structure is useful because it separates four kinds of competence. A developer first has to build applications, then understand how to protect them, then address user experience and monetization, and finally—if pursuing trainer status—demonstrate the ability to teach. It is a professional sequence rather than a collection of interchangeable tests.
Android ATC's public materials are not perfectly consistent. The current Exams page uses AND-X01, AND-X20, and AND-X30 for the Application Engineer route, while some other Android ATC pages still show X02/X03-style references and older FAQs can expose still earlier AND-8xx codes. That makes a “latest code” assumption risky unless it is checked against the live registration path.
Before buying an exam, write down the exact exam code, course revision, Android platform version referenced by the objectives, and the scheduling page you used. If a study source uses a different code, treat it as a separate version until you can prove the scopes match. This simple discipline prevents candidates from blending three generations of the program into one imaginary syllabus.
The same rule applies to technical examples. Permission behavior, background execution, storage, notification policies, and recommended Android APIs have changed across platform releases. A legacy question can still test a useful principle while demonstrating an implementation that should no longer be copied into a modern application.
The application-development exam should be prepared for through a complete project. Build an app with navigation, changing UI state, local persistence, remote data, validation, asynchronous work, and meaningful error handling. Keep architecture explicit so the UI is not directly responsible for networking, storage, and business logic. Then deliberately interrupt the happy path: rotate or recreate the screen, lose connectivity, expire authentication, return from the background, and retry failed work.
When reading code, explain why each layer exists. A developer who can describe lifecycle, state ownership, data flow, threading, and dependency boundaries is better prepared for unfamiliar questions than someone who memorizes APIs without understanding their role.
Security preparation should start with what an attacker can control. The client device is not a trusted server. Application packages can be inspected, devices can be compromised, other apps can send intents, networks can be hostile, and local files may be recoverable. From that premise, candidates can reason about secure transport, authentication tokens, exported components, permissions, storage, logs, WebViews, deep links, and third-party SDKs.
Practice with short threat models. Identify the valuable data, entry points, trust boundaries, likely misuse, and the control that reduces each risk. Also test lifecycle events such as logout, token refresh, app restore, backup, and permission denial. Security is stronger when it is connected to application behavior rather than studied as a list of definitions.
The current UI/UX and monetization focus means candidates should think beyond drawing screens. Navigation, hierarchy, feedback, empty and error states, responsive layouts, accessibility, text scaling, focus order, touch targets, and performance all affect whether a user can complete a task. Test an interface with realistic data and failure states rather than only ideal screenshots.
Monetization introduces another set of design decisions. Advertising, subscriptions, paid features, and in-app purchases can change onboarding, account state, consent, analytics, and policy obligations. A sustainable design makes the commercial model understandable and does not sabotage the core user task with excessive friction.
Android ATC says that its Training Skills exam, AND-400, is part of the route to becoming an Android ATC Certified Trainer after the Application Engineer requirements are met. The purpose is not to retest coding at a higher level. It adds the ability to organize and communicate technical learning.
A trainer needs clear objectives, demonstrations that expose the important idea, exercises that force learners to practice, questions that reveal misconceptions, and feedback that helps learners self-correct. Classroom management also matters: pacing, handling mixed experience levels, keeping labs productive, and knowing when to explain versus when to let someone debug.
Preparation should therefore include teaching. Take one Android topic—lifecycle, permissions, networking, or UI state—and deliver a short lesson to another person. Ask them to perform a task afterward and observe where your explanation failed. That is more relevant to trainer readiness than simply rereading development notes.
The presence of an old exam identifier proves that an exam existed in the current certification material; it does not prove that the exam is currently offered. Legacy AND-401/402/403 content should be reviewed at the concept level. If a question is about a durable idea such as activity lifecycle, application components, UI principles, or permission reasoning, it may still be educational. If it depends on a deprecated API, old platform policy, or retired program structure, it should be labeled historical.
A useful review method is to tag each legacy item as “principle still current,” “implementation changed,” or “administrative/program detail retired.” This preserves valuable learning without letting old test mechanics dictate the present certification plan. It also gives candidates a reason to verify doubtful details in current Android documentation.
The Google Android certification exam belongs to Google's Associate Android Developer lineage. Google states that the Associate Android Developer exam is retired and no longer accepts new registrations. Android ATC, by contrast, continues to publish its own certification examinations. The overlap is technical subject matter, not credential ownership.
Current learners can also use the discussion of the Google Android Development Professional Certificate as broader educational context. It is not an Android ATC exam and it does not replace the AND-X sequence. Keeping provider, course, and certification names separate prevents a common source of confusion in Android career planning.
Organize preparation by exam code and evidence of competence. For AND-X01, keep the application project, architecture notes, debugging cases, and development objectives together. For AND-X20, keep threat models, security tests, and security objectives together. For AND-X30, keep design critiques, accessibility tests, and monetization scenarios together. If pursuing AND-400, keep lesson plans and teaching exercises separate from technical exam material.
This matrix makes version conflicts visible immediately. If an old resource says AND-402 and your current plan says AND-X20, you know to validate the relationship before importing anything into your current study checklist.
Schedule practice in the same way. Development work can use longer build-and-debug sessions; security benefits from short threat-model and review exercises; UI/UX improves through repeated critique and usability testing; trainer preparation needs live explanation and feedback. Separating these activities prevents one comfortable study mode—such as reading code—from crowding out the skills the other exams actually require.
The most important preparation skill here is not memorizing an exam code; it is controlling versions. Android ATC's current Exams page provides the best operational picture of the Application Engineer sequence, while its broader site contains older labels that can confuse candidates who collect resources indiscriminately.
Use the live program to define what you are pursuing, use current Android documentation to validate technical practice, and use older pages only when their content genuinely reinforces a durable concept. That approach makes the historical material useful without allowing it to redefine today's certification. Android preparation becomes more durable when architecture, lifecycle behavior, storage, networking, testing, security, performance, and user experience are practiced together in a small working application.
