SS&C Blue Prism's Blue Prism certifications centers on automation delivery roles rather than one generic RPA credential. The current Blue Prism University certification page includes Associate Developer, Developer, Professional Developer, ROM 2 Professional, Technical Architect, and other role-based certifications. Older exam codes such as AD01, AIE02, and APD01 remain visible in historical study material and should be treated with version awareness.
The relevant exams include AD01 Developer, AIE02 Installation Engineer, and APD01 Professional Developer, plus supporting editorial on Blue Prism and intelligent automation. Blue Prism University's live catalog should control current exam naming and availability.
| Current Blue Prism credential area | Primary emphasis |
|---|---|
| Developer | Secure, scalable process-solution design and implementation principles |
| Professional Developer | Advanced solution design, build quality and business-requirement interpretation |
| ROM2 Professional | Automation operating model, governance and delivery discipline |
| Technical Architect (v7) | Platform architecture, infrastructure, security and resilience |
Blue Prism describes its current Developer certification around understanding scalable, secure, and efficient process-solution design techniques and principles. That emphasis matters: an automation that completes one happy-path transaction is not necessarily production-ready.
Developers need to structure processes and business objects, manage data, navigate applications, use work queues, handle credentials, implement retries, classify exceptions, log meaningful events, and build reusable components. The quality of an RPA solution is largely determined by what happens when the environment is imperfect.
Process selection is an upstream engineering decision. Repetitive, rules-based, stable, high-volume work is generally easier to automate than processes with constant exceptions or poorly defined inputs. Automating a broken process can simply execute the waste faster. Developers should challenge unclear business rules before building.
Desktop and application dependencies should be documented. Screen resolution, application version, browser policy, regional settings, and virtual-desktop behavior can affect UI automation. Stable environments reduce noise and make genuine defects easier to isolate.
Blue Prism commonly separates business process logic from application interaction through processes and objects. That boundary reduces duplication when multiple automations use the same application. If the login screen changes, a well-designed business object can be updated without rewriting every process.
Candidates should practice identifying the right abstraction. An object should expose stable, meaningful actions such as “Create Customer” or “Read Invoice,” not leak every UI click into higher-level process logic. Overly large objects become difficult to test; overly granular ones push complexity back into the process.
Naming and documentation support reuse. Pages, actions, stages, queues, and environment variables should reveal intent to a developer who did not build the solution. Poor names create hidden dependencies and make incident response slower because operators cannot tell which component failed.
Environment variables and configuration should separate deployment-specific values from business logic. URLs, paths, queue names, and timeouts often differ across development, test, and production. Hard-coding them inside process logic makes promotion risky.
Work queues allow a process to load, prioritize, lock, complete, defer, retry, and report on transactional work. A queue design should define a unique key, data needed for processing, priority logic, retry strategy, and what constitutes completion or exception.
Not every failure should be retried. A temporary application timeout may succeed later, while invalid customer data will fail repeatedly until corrected. Exception classification should determine whether the item is retried, routed for manual review, or terminated permanently.
Queue analytics can expose operational problems. Rising exception rates, growing backlog, unusual processing times, or repeated retries may indicate an application change or bad input upstream. Automations should therefore publish enough metrics for operations teams to recognize degradation before business users report it.
Priority should be used carefully. If every item is marked urgent, the queue loses ordering value. Prioritization should represent real business impact and should be documented so a support team can explain why one transaction ran before another.
Production automations need predictable behavior when systems are slow, fields are missing, credentials expire, pop-ups appear, or applications crash. Exception blocks should capture enough context to diagnose the problem without exposing sensitive information.
Recovery logic should return the application and process to a known state. Blindly retrying from the middle of a transaction can create duplicates. Idempotency is valuable: where possible, design actions so they can be repeated safely or so the process can detect that the business action already occurred.
Blue Prism's current Professional Developer certification evaluates the ability to design, build, and configure process automations using Blue Prism best practices and to analyze Process Definition Documents. This level expects stronger judgment about architecture, reuse, resilience, performance, and business requirements.
A closer look at Blue Prism Professional Developer certification can support candidates, but live Blue Prism University requirements should take precedence if the exam structure changes.
The current Blue Prism certification catalog includes Technical Architect (v7). Architecture work includes platform installation, application servers, databases, runtime resources, connectivity, security, credentials, high availability, disaster recovery, performance, and operational support.
The architect should understand failure domains. If the database is unavailable, what stops? If one application server fails, which services continue? How are runtime resources scaled? Which communications require certificates? What backup and restoration procedure has actually been tested? The environment should be designed for recoverability rather than assuming infrastructure will never fail.
Capacity planning should account for schedules, concurrency, target applications, database load, and peak transaction windows. Adding runtime resources does not help if all bots are blocked by the same slow application or database. Architects should identify the actual bottleneck before scaling infrastructure.
Disaster recovery should be tested with a documented recovery sequence. Backups of the Blue Prism database and configuration are useful only when teams know how to restore services, re-establish credentials or certificates, reconnect runtime resources, and verify business processes after recovery.
Blue Prism's Robotic Operating Model concepts address how an organization identifies, prioritizes, designs, governs, supports, and improves automations. Current ROM2 Professional certification reflects that enterprise-management perspective.
A center of excellence needs intake criteria, design standards, code review, release management, support ownership, security, benefits tracking, and lifecycle decisions. Without governance, teams can automate many local tasks while accumulating fragile processes that no one owns.
Benefits realization should use operational evidence. Hours “saved” during a design estimate are not the same as realized value if volume is lower than expected, exceptions require manual work, or support cost increases. Programs should track throughput, success rate, manual intervention, license and infrastructure cost, and business outcomes after deployment.
Automation retirement is part of governance too. When an application is replaced or a process is redesigned, obsolete automations should be disabled, credentials removed, schedules cleared, documentation archived, and dependencies checked. Orphaned bots create both cost and security risk.
Automations frequently log into business applications and access sensitive records. Credentials should be stored and retrieved through approved secure mechanisms rather than embedded in process logic or configuration files. Access should be least-privilege and separated by environment.
Logs can also leak secrets. A useful debug message should identify the failing step without recording passwords, tokens, personal data, or confidential documents. Review logging as part of security testing rather than only during incident response.
Separation of duties can reduce risk in higher-value automations. Developers do not necessarily need production passwords, and operations staff do not need permission to edit process logic. Environment access should follow role and should be reviewed when people change teams.
Auditability is also important when bots perform financial, customer, or regulated transactions. Logs should identify the work item, automation version, outcome, and exception without exposing sensitive data. This allows investigators to reconstruct what the automation did.
AD01, AIE02, and APD01 are destinations because they represent established Blue Prism exam history. However, Blue Prism's current public certification page now presents credentials primarily by current role name, including Developer, Professional Developer, ROM2 Professional, and Technical Architect (v7).
Do not assume an old code maps directly to today's exam simply because the role name is similar. Extract durable RPA design concepts, then confirm the current Blue Prism University exam before scheduling. Blue Prism also introduced a renewal program effective July 1, 2026 under which its Associate Developer, Developer, and Professional Developer certifications have a three-year validity period; other current credentials can follow different validity rules.
Certification maintenance also changed in 2026. Blue Prism University states that, from July 1, 2026, its Associate Developer, Developer, and Professional Developer certifications carry a three-year validity period and will use renewal exams, while ROM2 Professional and Technical Architect v7 are currently lifetime credentials. Candidates should therefore record the specific credential's expiration policy rather than assume every Blue Prism badge follows the same renewal cycle.
Blue Prism certification is strongest when it validates dependable automation, not simply recorder-style task replication. Developers, architects, and governance professionals all contribute to the same outcome: automations that are secure, recoverable, maintainable, and worth operating at scale.
After the first successful run, change the target application slightly or inject malformed input. A mature automation should fail predictably and leave enough evidence for support. This final resilience test often reveals more about solution quality than another set of happy-path practice questions.
