CNCF Certifications: Kubernetes, Security, and Platform Engineering

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), working with the Linux Foundation, now operates a broad vendor-neutral certification portfolio for Kubernetes and the surrounding cloud native ecosystem. The best-known credentials remain Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD), and Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS), but the catalog has expanded into associate-level cloud native foundations, security, Prometheus, Istio, Cilium, Argo, GitOps, OpenTelemetry, Kyverno, Backstage, and platform engineering.

Relevant credentials and exams include CKA, CKAD, KCNA, and KCSA. Supporting editorial content such as the Kubernetes is useful for concept development, while CNCF's live curriculum remains the authority for exact exam scope and Kubernetes version.

KCNA is the entry point for cloud native foundations

Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate is designed for learners who need conceptual understanding before moving into the deeper performance-based certifications. CNCF's current outline covers Kubernetes fundamentals, container orchestration, cloud native application delivery, and cloud native architecture. The exam is online, proctored, and multiple choice rather than a command-line lab.

KCNA should still be prepared for through a small practical environment. Candidates should understand what containers are, why orchestration exists, what pods and nodes represent, how services expose applications, how configuration and secrets are supplied, and how storage and networking fit into a cluster.

The exam also reaches beyond Kubernetes into the wider CNCF landscape. Service mesh, observability, GitOps, storage, and networking projects make more sense when the candidate understands the problem each category solves rather than memorizing project logos.

CKA validates hands-on cluster administration

The Certified Kubernetes Administrator credential is performance based. Candidates work in a command-line environment and must solve practical cluster-administration tasks under time pressure. That changes preparation completely: knowing what a Deployment is does not help enough if the candidate cannot create, inspect, repair, and verify one quickly.

Core preparation should include cluster architecture, workloads, scheduling, services, networking, storage, configuration, troubleshooting, upgrades, RBAC, and operational maintenance. The article on Kubernetes cluster architecture can reinforce the control-plane and worker-node model.

Practice with deliberately broken resources. Misconfigure a Service selector, make a pod unschedulable, break a mount, apply an invalid NetworkPolicy, or create an RBAC denial. Then use kubectl, events, logs, resource descriptions, and node information to find the cause instead of immediately rebuilding the resource.

Cluster upgrades deserve deliberate practice because Kubernetes components have version-skew rules and dependencies. Administrators should understand a controlled sequence for control-plane and worker-node upgrades, how to drain workloads safely, how to preserve availability, and how to verify that critical system pods and add-ons remain healthy afterward. An upgrade is not complete because the package manager returned success; workloads, networking, storage, DNS, and admission behavior still need validation.

Backup and recovery are also part of administration. etcd contains critical cluster state in many self-managed architectures, so candidates should understand the purpose of snapshots and the implications of restoring them. In managed Kubernetes, responsibility may shift toward the provider, but application teams still need backup strategies for persistent data and configuration that the control plane does not protect automatically.

CKAD focuses on application behavior inside Kubernetes

The Certified Kubernetes Application Developer exam validates the ability to design, build, configure, deploy, expose, observe, and troubleshoot cloud native applications in Kubernetes. The current CNCF curriculum weights application design/build, deployment, observability/maintenance, environment/configuration/security, and services/networking.

The CKAD exam is directly relevant to this credential. Focused guidance on Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) can deepen the study strategy without overemphasizing repetitive practice material.

Application developers should understand probes, resource requests/limits, ConfigMaps, Secrets, volumes, Jobs, CronJobs, Services, ingress or gateway concepts, deployments, rollouts, security contexts, and debugging. The best lab is one application deployed repeatedly under changing constraints.

CKS is the specialist security path built on CKA

Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist is also performance based and requires candidates to have passed CKA before attempting the CKS exam. CNCF's current domains cover cluster setup, cluster hardening, system hardening, minimizing microservice vulnerabilities, supply-chain security, and monitoring/logging/runtime security.

Security preparation should begin with threat boundaries. The Kubernetes API, etcd, nodes, container runtime, images, service accounts, Secrets, admission controls, workloads, network paths, and CI/CD pipeline all create different exposures. A cluster can be correctly functional while being dangerously overprivileged.

A focused review of Kubernetes security can reinforce hardening principles. Candidates should still practice them on a live cluster: restrict RBAC, run workloads as non-root, use seccomp or other controls where required, validate images, create NetworkPolicies, and interpret audit or runtime evidence.

KCSA provides a lower-risk security foundation

Kubernetes and Cloud Security Associate is the pre-professional security credential. Its current scope includes cloud native security concepts, Kubernetes component security, threat models, platform security, hardening, monitoring, compliance, and incident-response awareness. It is multiple-choice and does not require CKA.

The KCSA exam is therefore appropriate for professionals who work around cloud native security but do not yet administer clusters at CKA depth. Security analysts, governance professionals, platform engineers, and developers can use the credential to establish shared terminology before specializing.

Do not use KCSA as a substitute for hands-on security practice. Even conceptual candidates should inspect Kubernetes manifests, RBAC bindings, pod security settings, image provenance, network controls, and common audit events.

The CNCF catalog now extends far beyond Kubernetes core exams

CNCF's current certification page includes Prometheus Certified Associate, Istio Certified Associate, Cilium Certified Associate, Certified Argo Project Associate, GitOps Certified Associate, Certified Backstage Associate, OpenTelemetry Certified Associate, Kyverno Certified Associate, Cloud Native Platform Engineering Associate, and Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer.

This reflects the reality of production cloud native systems. Kubernetes schedules and manages workloads, but organizations also need observability, policy, networking, service-to-service communication, delivery automation, developer portals, and platform engineering.

Specialization should follow the work. SREs may gain more from Prometheus and OpenTelemetry. Network engineers may prefer Cilium. Platform teams may choose GitOps, Backstage, or platform engineering. Service-mesh operators may prefer Istio. Avoid collecting associate badges without a practical project that connects them.

Observability is a useful example of ecosystem layering. Metrics can explain saturation and trends, logs provide event and application detail, and traces reveal how one request crosses distributed services. Prometheus and OpenTelemetry credentials make more sense when candidates understand which operational question each signal can answer.

GitOps creates a similar connection between development and platform operations. Desired state is stored in version control and reconciled toward the cluster, which improves review and auditability but also introduces repository, credential, reconciliation, and rollback dependencies. Platform engineers should understand both the benefit and the new failure modes rather than treating GitOps as simply “deploy from Git.”

CARE changed certification maintenance in 2026

CNCF introduced the Certification Advancement & Recertification Experience (CARE) to make renewal less fragmented. Under the current program, passing a higher-level or related certification can extend selected foundational credentials. CNCF announced in June 2026 that passing or recertifying CKS can extend an existing CKA certification, following similar logic introduced for security pathways earlier in the year.

This creates a useful planning strategy. A professional moving from CKA into security can progress into CKS and receive maintenance benefit rather than treating every credential as an isolated renewal task. The exact eligibility and extension rules should be checked on CNCF's current CARE page because the program is still relatively new.

Certification validity and Kubernetes versions also matter. CNCF updates performance exams to follow Kubernetes releases, so old study environments can drift from current commands, APIs, or objectives.

Cloud native troubleshooting should follow layers

When an application fails, separate image/build, scheduling, container startup, configuration, service discovery, network policy, storage, ingress, DNS, identity, and application behavior. A pod in CrashLoopBackOff needs a different investigation from a healthy pod that cannot be reached through a Service.

Events often provide the fastest clue. Resource descriptions expose configuration and status. Logs show application or container behavior. Endpoint objects or EndpointSlices reveal whether Services have backends. RBAC authorization checks can prove access. Network tests can distinguish DNS from transport failure.

This layered method is especially important in time-limited performance exams because random YAML edits can create more problems than they solve.

Resource pressure is another common source of confusion. CPU throttling, out-of-memory termination, ephemeral-storage exhaustion, node disk pressure, unavailable persistent volumes, and scheduling constraints can all surface as application instability. Administrators should inspect requests, limits, actual usage, node conditions, and events together before assuming the application code is faulty.

Prepare through command fluency and reusable mental models

  • Use the live CNCF curriculum for the exact exam date.
  • Build a local or cloud Kubernetes environment and work from the CLI every day.
  • Practice imperative commands where they save time, then verify generated YAML.
  • Know where official documentation can help and how to navigate it quickly within exam rules.
  • Break resources intentionally and diagnose them without starting over.
  • For security, include RBAC, supply-chain, runtime, network and host controls.
  • Use CARE strategically when planning recertification and progression.

CNCF certification is most valuable when it mirrors real cloud native work. Associate exams establish vocabulary, CKA/CKAD/CKS prove operational skill, and the growing specialist catalog lets professionals deepen into the ecosystem their platform actually uses.
