PeopleCert Certification: A Portfolio of Methods, Not One Ladder

PeopleCert now sits behind several major professional certification families, including ITIL, PRINCE2 Project Management, DevOps Institute certifications, and IASSC Lean and Lean Six Sigma credentials. These programs share a delivery and certification platform, but they validate different professional capabilities. A service-management candidate, a project manager, a DevOps leader, and a Lean Six Sigma practitioner should not be pushed through one generic “PeopleCert path.”

The portfolio is also changing. ITIL Foundation Version 5 is live in 2026, PRINCE2 Project Management uses Version 7 naming, PeopleCert has refreshed certificate branding, and a number of older DevOps Institute and PRINCE2-related certifications have retirement dates. Candidates should therefore verify the exact product suite, version, and retirement status before building a study plan. PeopleCert is the awarding body; the method or discipline remains the substance.

ITIL Version 5 is the current service-management entry point

PeopleCert positions ITIL Foundation Version 5 as the current entry point for digital product and service management. The live exam is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, with a 65 percent passing score. includes ITIL Foundation Version 5. Candidates coming from ITIL 4 should not assume that familiar terminology makes the new version automatic.

Study the broader ITIL certification family as a value system. Take a digital service and identify stakeholders, products and services, value, governance, practices, improvement, and the lifecycle of work from demand to outcome. Then ask how AI-enabled environments, product thinking, and modern digital management change decisions. This is more useful than memorizing isolated definitions because Foundation questions often test relationships between concepts.

The current ITIL Foundation Version 5 exam is intentionally compact—40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with a 65 percent pass mark—but that does not mean the content should be studied as forty isolated facts. PeopleCert’s Version 5 guidance keeps the management practices central and organizes the 34 practices into product-and-service management and general management groupings. Use the exam format to practice disciplined reading while using the wider model to understand why an action creates value.

The ITIL 4-to-5 bridge is a transition tool, not a shortcut for newcomers

PeopleCert offers an ITIL Foundation Bridge Version 5 route for existing ITIL 4 Foundation holders. The purpose is to learn the changes without repeating content already demonstrated. also carries ITIL Version 5 Transformation material. Candidates should confirm which bridge or transformation product applies to their existing certification before purchasing or studying.

Build a delta sheet: what stayed conceptually stable, what was renamed, what was expanded, and what is genuinely new. Then test each change against a service scenario. A bridge candidate should be able to explain how the updated concept changes practice; otherwise the preparation has become a vocabulary comparison rather than a professional transition.

PRINCE2 Version 7 remains a project-management method

PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation and Practitioner Version 7 are current PeopleCert qualifications. The PRINCE2 Project Management Foundation and PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner exams map to those two levels. Foundation establishes understanding of the method; Practitioner expects candidates to apply and tailor it in scenarios.

Prepare with one project across the PRINCE2 certification family rather than seven disconnected principles or practices. Define the business case, organization, plans, quality expectations, risk, issues, progress controls, and stage boundaries. Then change the project environment and decide how the method should be tailored. Practitioner skill is visible when governance remains controlled without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.

Version 7 preparation should also separate method knowledge from exam level. Foundation asks whether the candidate understands the language and structure of PRINCE2; Practitioner asks whether that structure can be applied and tailored in context. When reviewing a scenario, identify the management product, decision authority, stage or process context, and tolerances before selecting an action. This reduces the common error of choosing a reasonable project-management response that is not the PRINCE2 response for that role and moment.

DevOps Institute certifications focus on flow, reliability, and culture

PeopleCert continues to offer DevOps Institute certifications such as DevOps Foundation and DevOps Leader, while some older titles have been retired. DevOps preparation should not collapse into a tools list. The core professional problem is improving the flow of value while maintaining quality, reliability, security, feedback, and collaboration across development and operations.

Use a value-stream exercise. Map work from idea to production, record wait time and handoffs, identify a failure mode, and propose an improvement involving automation, team behavior, measurement, or architecture. Then define the metric that would show whether the change helped. This keeps DevOps certification grounded in system performance instead of fashionable terminology.

Lean and Lean Six Sigma are separate improvement paths within the portfolio

PeopleCert’s IASSC offerings include Lean credentials and Lean Six Sigma Yellow, Green, and Black Belt levels. has a broader Lean Six Sigma certification exam and supporting editorial material on Black Belt and Green Belt topics. Candidates should choose the depth that matches their improvement responsibilities rather than treating belt color as a status hierarchy detached from actual project work.

Build a process-improvement case with a clear problem statement, customer requirement, baseline, root-cause evidence, improvement hypothesis, and control plan. For Lean, emphasize flow, waste, bottlenecks, and value. For Six Sigma, add measurement quality, variation, capability, hypothesis testing, and statistical control. The tools become much easier to remember when each is tied to a decision in DMAIC.

Renewal changes the economics of certification planning

Many current PeopleCert certifications carry three-year renewal expectations. PeopleCert promotes membership-based continuous professional development as one route and allows renewal through successful completion of another certification in the same product suite where applicable. Candidates should include renewal in the original certification plan rather than treating it as a surprise three years later.

Create a maintenance plan when the badge is earned. Record the renewal date, acceptable CPD activities, relevant next modules, and the work evidence you want to build before renewal. A certification path becomes more valuable when ongoing development follows job responsibility, not when renewal pressure triggers random course purchases near expiration.

Renewal should be mapped by product suite rather than by brand alone. PeopleCert states that ITIL Version 5 certificates carry a three-year renewal date, and its broader Global Best Practice framework provides renewal routes through applicable continuing professional development or another qualifying certification in the same suite. That makes progression decisions more strategic: the next credential should strengthen the person’s role and, where relevant, also keep earlier credentials current.

Retirements make current-status checking mandatory

PeopleCert has announced retirements across older PRINCE2 Agile, RESILIA, Lean IT, software-testing, and other legacy offerings. A page, book, or course can still exist online after the purchase window has closed or the final exam date has passed. Candidates should verify live availability before investing time in a legacy syllabus.

One transition is especially time-sensitive in late 2026: PeopleCert lists PRINCE2 Agile Version 1 Foundation and Practitioner with a final voucher-purchase date of June 30, 2026 and a final exam date of December 31, 2026. A candidate who already holds a voucher may still have an exam window, while a newcomer should not build a fresh plan around a product that can no longer be newly purchased. Record both dates because “retiring” can mean different things before and after the sales cutoff.

Keep legacy material only when it teaches durable concepts that still matter in the successor path. Label it clearly. For example, old service-management, project, DevOps, or process-improvement material may contain sound techniques while no longer representing a current certification. Separating enduring practice from retired exam logistics is one of the most important habits in a portfolio that evolves frequently.

Exam technique should preserve the logic of the method

Scenario questions often contain several actions that could be sensible in ordinary work, but only one fits the method, role, timing, and authority described. Before selecting an answer, identify the product suite, version, role, and decision level. An ITIL practice owner, PRINCE2 project board member, DevOps team, and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt can all improve performance, yet the mechanisms and accountabilities differ. This simple classification step reduces the temptation to answer every problem with the candidate’s favorite framework.

Use official terminology precisely but avoid turning study into word matching. Paraphrase a principle or practice in your own words, apply it to a case, and then return to the official definition to check whether the meaning was preserved. The goal is to understand the concept well enough to recognize it when the question uses unfamiliar language. This is especially helpful after a version change, when an older phrase may still be common in workplaces even though the current exam uses updated wording.

For teams holding multiple PeopleCert credentials, keep a shared current-status register and review it quarterly. Record active versions, renewal rules, retirement announcements, and which internal learning materials belong to legacy syllabi. This prevents well-intentioned mentors from teaching expired exam logistics while allowing useful historical practices to remain available as professional knowledge.

A practical way to navigate the portfolio is to start with the operating problem. If the problem concerns service value, practices, products, and continual improvement, ITIL is the natural language. If it concerns temporary project governance and staged decision-making, PRINCE2 is more relevant. If it concerns development-to-operations flow, reliability, and culture, a DevOps Institute path may fit. Lean and Lean Six Sigma address improvement and variation through another lens. These bodies of knowledge can coexist in one organization, but they should not be collapsed into a single progression ladder.

Use scenario translation to test whether the distinctions are clear. Take one incident-heavy digital service and ask how an ITIL practitioner would frame the issue, how a PRINCE2 project might govern a major remediation initiative, how DevOps practices could improve the delivery system, and where Lean techniques could remove waste. The same business situation can support several methods without making the credentials interchangeable. This kind of comparison helps candidates choose the right method in context rather than matching keywords to memorized definitions.

For renewal planning, maintain evidence while learning rather than reconstructing it at the end of a cycle. Record completed activities, dates, providers, subjects, and how they relate to the credential. Keep version changes in the same record. That small operational habit reduces administrative risk and encourages continuous learning instead of a last-minute scramble shortly before a renewal deadline.

When combining methods at work, keep vocabulary precise. A practice, principle, management product, value stream, and improvement tool are not interchangeable merely because they appear in the same transformation program. Precision prevents certification knowledge from becoming a blended set of slogans and makes cross-framework collaboration much easier.

PeopleCert certification planning starts by naming the discipline: service management, project management, DevOps, Lean, Lean Six Sigma, or another product suite. Then verify the current version, exam status, and renewal rules. Study with scenarios that reflect the method’s real work. The shared PeopleCert platform matters operationally, but the professional value comes from mastering the distinct system behind each credential.
