The Nokia 4A0-D03 SR Linux EVPN and Data Center Interconnect exam is active in 2026 and is a written requirement in Nokia’s Data Center Fabric Network Expert path. The current Nokia listing gives candidates 90 minutes for 40 questions. The current course recommends Data Center Fabric Fundamentals plus basic BGP and 7750 SR VPLS/VPRN knowledge.
D03 moves beyond fabric basics into advanced EVPN behavior and interconnection between data centers. Nokia’s current course covers EVPN route types, Layer 2 and Layer 3 EVPN, all-active and single-active multihoming, MAC protection, duplication monitoring, proxy ARP, and DCI designs that interoperate with 7750 SR MPLS-based EVPN-VPLS and VPRN services.
The broader Nokia certifications make this exam a bridge between SR Linux data-center fabrics and the provider-routing technologies Nokia has long used in WAN and service networks.
In a VXLAN fabric, tunnel endpoints need to know where remote MAC and IP endpoints live. EVPN uses multiprotocol BGP to advertise this reachability rather than relying entirely on flood-and-learn behavior.
Candidates should understand the major EVPN route types and the purpose of the information each carries. Some advertise MAC/IP bindings, some describe Ethernet segments and multihoming, and others support multi-destination replication or IP-prefix reachability.
Operationally, this means an endpoint can be missing because the local access learned it incorrectly, the EVPN route was not generated, BGP policy blocked it, or the remote fabric did not import it.
Layer 2 EVPN allows endpoints in a common MAC-VRF to communicate across VXLAN tunnels while the underlay remains a Layer 3 routed network. This lets the fabric support Ethernet adjacency without extending traditional spanning-tree domains through the core.
Remote MAC information can be distributed through EVPN, reducing unknown-unicast flooding compared with pure data-plane learning models.
Candidates should understand how local VLAN or subinterface attachment maps into a MAC-VRF and VXLAN service, then how the remote tunnel endpoint delivers the frame into the corresponding service context.
Data-center tenants frequently need routing between subnets as well as Layer 2 adjacency. L3 EVPN models distribute IP reachability while preserving tenant isolation in separate IP-VRF contexts.
Symmetric and asymmetric models place different forwarding responsibilities on ingress and egress tunnel endpoints. Candidates should understand the architectural difference and why symmetric designs can scale differently by carrying routing context across the VXLAN path.
Troubleshooting should identify whether the missing state is a local tenant route, an EVPN advertisement, a tunnel endpoint, or an underlay route.
Servers or access switches can connect to more than one SR Linux node. EVPN Ethernet-segment signaling allows those nodes to coordinate the multihomed attachment and provide redundant forwarding.
All-active designs can use multiple links simultaneously, improving bandwidth and resilience. The control plane must prevent duplicates and loops while ensuring remote PEs know that several nodes can reach the same Ethernet segment.
Mass-withdraw behavior can accelerate convergence when one multihoming node fails by invalidating a group of dependent reachability instead of waiting for every MAC to age independently.
Some attached devices or service designs cannot safely forward through multiple provider edges at the same time. Single-active multihoming selects one forwarding path while keeping another available for failover.
Candidates should understand designated-forwarder behavior and how the EVPN control plane coordinates which PE handles specific multi-destination traffic.
Failover testing should verify both directions. The standby needs to take over when the active path fails, and the network needs a predictable behavior when the original path returns.
Unexpected MAC movement can indicate endpoint mobility, but it can also signal a loop or misconfiguration. Nokia’s D03 course includes MAC protection and duplication monitoring so the fabric can identify abnormal patterns rather than endlessly relearn an unstable address.
Operators should understand the difference between legitimate mobility and oscillation. A rapidly moving MAC can create control-plane churn and intermittent forwarding even when every link is technically up.
Thresholds and protection behavior should be chosen carefully so normal virtual-machine or workload mobility is not mistaken for an attack or fault.
If EVPN has a reliable IP-to-MAC binding, a fabric node can answer some address-resolution requests on behalf of the remote endpoint instead of flooding the request through the overlay.
This reduces broadcast traffic and improves scale, especially in large tenant networks. The optimization depends on control-plane accuracy; stale or incorrect bindings can create difficult connectivity symptoms.
Candidates should therefore understand where the proxy information comes from and how to verify that the advertised MAC/IP state matches the actual endpoint.
Data Center Interconnect joins otherwise separate fabrics or connects data-center services to a wider MPLS network. Nokia’s current course covers both gateway-less and gateway-based approaches and explicit interoperability with 7750 SR.
A Layer 2 DCI can extend an EVPN service toward an MPLS EVPN-VPLS environment, while Layer 3 interconnect can map SR Linux EVPN routing into MPLS-based VPRN service models.
The design should be deliberate about failure domains. Extending Layer 2 too broadly can increase blast radius, while Layer 3 boundaries can simplify routing and fault isolation when applications do not require adjacency.
D03 assumes basic BGP because EVPN uses BGP as its signaling control plane. Route reflection, address families, route targets, and policy determine which EVPN state reaches which fabric nodes.
Interoperability with provider WANs also makes traditional service-routing knowledge valuable. A candidate who understands VPLS, VPRN, and MPLS can see how the data-center overlay is translated or connected at the DCI gateway instead of treating the WAN as an opaque cloud.
This cross-domain reasoning is one of the exam’s main values: modern data centers are not operationally isolated from transport networks.
Nokia’s current course is hands-on and explicitly includes L2 EVPN all-active and single-active multihoming, L3 EVPN, and DCI labs. Candidates should reproduce those patterns and observe EVPN routes, Ethernet segments, MAC/IP state, and tunnel forwarding. Fail one multihomed link, one fabric node, the DCI gateway, or a BGP session and predict which routes should be withdrawn and which traffic should continue. Then verify that state returns cleanly after recovery. Because 4A0-D03 remains current, the live Nokia DCF exam and course pages should define final preparation. The durable skill is being able to operate EVPN as a real distributed control plane across data-center fabrics and their WAN interconnects. EVPN route-target and route-distinguisher planning become more important across DCI boundaries. Local fabrics can use independent identifiers, but the interconnection design still needs deterministic import/export behavior so only intended tenants or services extend between sites.
Failure-domain control is one of the biggest DCI design questions. Extending Layer 2 between sites can preserve application adjacency but also extends broadcast, MAC-move, and operational dependencies. Layer 3 DCI can create a cleaner boundary when applications can tolerate routing between sites. Candidates should be able to explain why a workload needs one model rather than assuming Layer 2 extension is always more flexible. Underlay MTU and encapsulation overhead must also be validated. VXLAN, MPLS, and DCI encapsulations add bytes to the customer packet. A path that carries small pings successfully can still drop larger application frames when one segment has insufficient MTU. Route reflection and BGP scaling deserve attention in multi-fabric environments. EVPN state can grow rapidly with tenants, MAC/IP advertisements, Ethernet segments, and IP prefixes. Reflector placement, address-family policy, and monitoring should be designed so control-plane scale remains predictable. Operational handoff should document both fabrics and the DCI translation. Engineers need to know which SR Linux service maps to which 7750 SR EVPN-VPLS or VPRN construct, which route targets are shared, and which transport path carries the inter-site traffic. That map makes cross-platform incidents much faster to isolate.
EVPN convergence can be faster than waiting for ordinary MAC aging because control-plane withdrawals communicate topology changes directly. Candidates should understand which route withdrawals follow a PE, Ethernet-segment, or endpoint failure and how remote nodes update forwarding. Anycast gateway designs can provide a consistent default gateway across several leaf switches, reducing the need for endpoint traffic to cross the fabric merely to reach a centralized router. The design depends on consistent gateway identity and correct EVPN/IP-VRF signaling. DCI security deserves explicit attention because inter-site links can extend tenant reachability beyond one physical location. Route-target policy, encryption where required, management-plane protection, and clear tenant boundaries should prevent one fabric from importing unintended state from another. Capacity planning should include control-plane as well as bandwidth scale. Large fabrics can advertise many MAC/IP routes, IP prefixes, Ethernet segments, and multihoming state. Route reflectors, gateways, and monitoring systems need enough capacity to process that state during normal operation and during large convergence events.
External route exchange should also be designed with clear ownership. A DCI gateway may learn routes from a WAN VPRN, an SR Linux EVPN fabric, or both. Import and export policy should make it obvious which system is authoritative for each prefix so the interconnect does not create loops or unexpected preference. Change validation should include endpoint reachability before and after maintenance. Because EVPN distributes state dynamically, a BGP or route-target change can have a wider blast radius than one physical link. Operators should compare route counts, multihoming state, MAC/IP advertisements, and real traffic rather than relying on configuration acceptance alone.
