The services and architectural ideas remain relevant: compute needs networks, applications need durable storage, databases need protection, workloads need scaling and operators need monitoring. The difference is that preparation should be organized around the current cloud-engineer role rather than an archived product list.
Alibaba Cloud's certification update states that ACA Cloud Computing Associate reached end of life in March 2025 and was replaced by Cloud Engineer (Associate). That means new candidates should not look for a fresh ACA-Cloud1 booking window. Certificates earned before retirement continue under the vendor's stated validity rules, but the learning path has moved forward.
This distinction matters because certification sites often preserve old pages long after vendors change programs. A page can remain useful for historical search traffic without accurately describing what can be scheduled now. Good preparation begins by separating the page you found from the credential the vendor currently sells. For ACA-Cloud1, the current destination is CEA-C01.
Cloud computing still begins with resource abstraction, on-demand provisioning, elasticity, metering and shared infrastructure. When internet exposure should be removed? These questions connect ECS to Auto Scaling, disks, images, load balancing and VPC design. That integrated view is more useful than memorizing a console wizard.
A Virtual Private Cloud provides isolated network space where subnets, route behavior, addresses and security controls can be designed around the workload. Candidates should understand the purpose of CIDR planning, vSwitches, security groups, public and private addressing, and the way cloud resources communicate within and beyond a VPC.
Network design should start with communication requirements. Which systems need internet access? Which should accept inbound traffic? Which application tiers should communicate privately? How will administrators reach restricted resources? A strong associate-level engineer can translate those questions into a simple, supportable topology rather than placing every server on a flat network.
Alibaba Cloud exposes different storage models because applications need different behavior. Block storage supports disks attached to compute instances. Object Storage Service is designed for objects addressed through APIs and is well suited to static assets, backups, logs and large unstructured data sets. Databases provide structured persistence with transactional capabilities that object storage does not replace.
Preparation should compare these services by access method, persistence, scaling, performance and recovery characteristics. If a web application needs shared images, local instance disk may be a poor fit. If an operating system needs a boot volume, object storage is not the direct substitute. Service selection questions become straightforward when the candidate starts with application behavior.
ApsaraDB RDS reduces the operational work associated with database deployment, but customers still make important choices about engine, capacity, availability, backup, security and connectivity. Managed does not mean unmanaged. The engineer remains responsible for selecting a service configuration that meets the application's recovery, performance and access requirements.
Study database scenarios alongside networking and application design. A database should normally not need unrestricted public exposure. Credentials and permissions need control. Backups need retention appropriate to the business. Scaling and high availability have cost implications. The exam's value lies in understanding these trade-offs, not in remembering where a settings page sits in the console.
Server Load Balancer distributes traffic across backend resources, while Auto Scaling changes the number of resources available. They are often deployed together but should not be confused. A load balancer can improve distribution and availability even when the backend count is fixed; scaling can respond to demand even when traffic arrives through another mechanism.
Candidates should understand health checks, backend membership, listener behavior and the metrics or rules that trigger scaling actions. A sound design also considers warm-up time and application state. Adding instances quickly is only useful if the application can serve traffic correctly when a new instance joins the pool.
Resource Access Management supports identity and permissions, while CloudMonitor provides visibility into resource health and behavior. These are not optional add-ons to compute. Least privilege reduces the damage that one credential can cause, and monitoring reveals when workloads are approaching failure or behaving abnormally.
Prepare with operational stories. A developer needs deployment access but not account-wide administration. An operator needs alerts when CPU or network activity crosses a threshold. A service needs credentials without sharing a human user's password. These scenarios make identity and monitoring concrete and prepare the candidate for the role-oriented emphasis of the replacement certification.
Historically, ACA Cloud Computing sat below the more advanced ACP-Cloud1 professional exam. Alibaba Cloud has since refreshed both levels. The associate path now uses Cloud Engineer (Associate), while ACP Cloud Computing was replaced by Cloud Architect (Professional). The hierarchy therefore still exists, but the names and current exam codes have changed.
That progression helps a learner choose depth. Associate preparation emphasizes creating and managing core resources. Professional architecture moves further into resilient design, enterprise networking, security, databases, performance and complex solution trade-offs. Someone starting with an old ACA-Cloud1 page should first complete the current associate scope rather than jumping directly to archived professional objectives.
Prepare for CEA-C01 while using ACA-Cloud1 only as context. For a 2026 candidate, the practical action is clear: use the active Cloud Engineer (Associate) exam outline and current Alibaba Cloud training as the study contract. Old ACA-Cloud1 material can still help explain ECS, VPC, OSS, RDS, SLB and Auto Scaling, but every topic should be checked against today's services and the current CEA-C01 objectives.
A strong final lab is to build a small three-tier workload: place compute in a VPC, restrict traffic with security controls, attach persistent storage, use a managed database, publish the application through load balancing, enable monitoring and document the access model. Then rebuild it after changing one requirement. That exercise develops the resource-management judgment expected of today's Cloud Engineer and turns the legacy page into a useful bridge rather than a source of outdated exam assumptions.
Legacy preparation is most useful when it is converted into current hands-on work. If an old ACA-Cloud1 lesson explains a service, reproduce the same task in today's Alibaba Cloud environment and note what has changed in terminology, defaults, security controls or workflow. That practice separates durable cloud knowledge from details that belonged to the retired exam generation.
It is equally important to understand cost ownership at associate level. Resources that are stopped, detached or left public can continue to create cost or risk depending on the service. A cloud engineer should know how to identify unused capacity, clean up temporary labs and compare simple architecture choices before they become production habits. Operational discipline is part of cloud competence, not a topic reserved for architects.
One more useful comparison is between configuration knowledge and operational ownership. Creating a resource proves very little if the engineer cannot later identify who owns it, why it exists, what depends on it and when it can be removed. Current role-based certification makes that lifecycle mindset more important. Tagging conventions, basic documentation and deliberate cleanup may not look like headline cloud features, but they keep small environments from becoming expensive, insecure collections of forgotten resources.
