ACP-Cloud1: The Legacy Alibaba Cloud Professional Exam and the Cloud Architect Transition

ACP-Cloud1 represents Alibaba Cloud's former ACP Cloud Computing Professional certification. Alibaba Cloud Academy retired that certification on May 13, 2025 and replaced it with Cloud Architect (Professional), whose current exam code is CAP-C01. A 2026 learner should therefore treat ACP-Cloud1 as a historical professional-level syllabus, not as an exam that can still be scheduled.

The transition is part of the wider Alibaba Cloud certification redesign from product-family credentials toward explicit job roles. The old professional credential validated operational and architectural knowledge across core Alibaba Cloud services. The replacement keeps that depth but frames it around designing and implementing scalable, resilient enterprise solutions. That change should influence preparation: architecture decisions matter more than memorizing product facts.

ACP-Cloud1 remains useful because the enduring skills are still relevant. Professional candidates need to integrate compute, network, storage, databases, security, high availability, monitoring and cost considerations into complete systems. The study question should be "Why is this architecture appropriate?" rather than "Which service exists?"

Retirement means the old exam is history, not a current option

Alibaba Cloud's official update states that ACP Cloud Computing Professional reached end of life in May 2025 and was replaced by Cloud Architect (Professional). That makes current status a first-order preparation issue. Third-party pages may continue to label material ACP-Cloud1, but the vendor's active program has moved on.

The current professional certification uses CAP-C01, which is not the same as simply reissuing the old code. It reflects the role of a solution architect designing Alibaba Cloud environments for business requirements. Historical content should be filtered through that current role and current service behavior before it is trusted for exam preparation.

Professional architecture starts with requirements and constraints

A good architecture is not the one with the most managed services. It is the one that satisfies availability, performance, security, recovery, compliance, operability and budget requirements with acceptable complexity. Candidates should practice extracting those constraints from scenarios before choosing components. A requirement for low recovery time may drive a different database and region design than a workload where cost dominates.

Architecture also means recognizing conflicts. Stronger redundancy can increase cost. More isolation can increase operational overhead. Aggressive caching can improve latency while complicating freshness. The professional level expects the candidate to identify these trade-offs and choose a balanced design rather than optimizing one dimension in isolation.

Network design must scale beyond a single VPC

Professional scenarios often involve multiple environments, business units or connectivity domains. The architect needs consistent address planning, segmentation, routing and security boundaries that can grow without creating an unmanageable mesh. Hybrid connectivity adds further requirements around route control, redundancy, bandwidth and failure behavior.

A useful study technique is to draw traffic flows before selecting services. Mark where users, applications, databases, management systems and external networks sit. Then identify trust boundaries, public exposure, name resolution and failover expectations. This exposes hidden requirements and prevents network design from becoming an afterthought attached to compute.

High availability has to be designed at every layer

Running two instances is not automatically high availability. The application needs independent failure domains, health detection, traffic distribution, stateless or replicated application behavior and a data layer that can survive component failure. The architect must also consider dependencies such as DNS, external APIs, certificates and operational access.

Failure-mode thinking is essential. What happens if one instance fails? One zone? A database primary? A network path? A deployment introduces a bad version? Designing the expected response to each failure produces a far stronger architecture than adding redundancy without testing how failover actually occurs.

Data architecture determines recovery and consistency choices

Different workloads need different persistence models. Object storage, block storage and relational databases solve distinct problems, and professional designs may combine them. The architect must consider durability, transactional requirements, read and write patterns, backup, replication, retention and recovery objectives before choosing a service tier.

Recovery planning should be explicit. Backups protect against some failures but do not guarantee rapid restoration. Replication can improve availability but may also replicate logical errors. Cross-region copies can improve disaster resilience while increasing cost and operational complexity. Professional questions often reward candidates who distinguish availability from recoverability.

Security architecture is an end-to-end property

Security cannot be delegated to one firewall rule. Identity, network boundaries, encryption, secrets, logging, patching, vulnerability management and data protection all contribute to the control environment. Alibaba Cloud Resource Access Management should be designed around roles and least privilege, with high-risk operations separated from routine administration.

Network security should be paired with application and data controls. A private database is safer than an internet-exposed one, but weak credentials can still compromise it. Encryption reduces data exposure, but key management and access to decryption matter. The architect needs layered controls that continue to provide protection when one assumption fails.

Elasticity must be tied to application behavior

Auto Scaling and load balancing can support variable demand, but they work best when the application can add or remove capacity cleanly. Session state, background jobs, connection limits and startup time can all interfere with scaling. A professional design should define health checks, scaling signals, minimum capacity and safe deployment behavior.

Cost is part of the design. Overprovisioning can hide weak scaling logic, while aggressive scale-in can disrupt users. Candidates should practice choosing metrics that represent real demand rather than convenient system counters. The architecture should adapt to workload patterns while keeping enough headroom for failure and traffic spikes.

Observability turns architecture into an operable service

A design is incomplete if the operations team cannot tell whether it is healthy. Metrics, logs, alerts and audit records should be planned around service objectives and known failure modes. A CPU alarm may be useful, but user-facing latency, error rates, database capacity and dependency health may reveal problems earlier.

Runbooks and escalation paths are part of operational architecture as well. When an alarm fires, the team should know what evidence to inspect and what actions are safe. Professional certification should encourage designs that can be maintained under pressure, not only diagrams that look resilient on paper.

The refreshed pathway separates associate operation from professional architecture

The older ACA-Cloud1 associate exam and ACP-Cloud1 formed a natural progression. Today, CEA-C01 Cloud Engineer (Associate) covers the current foundational role, while Cloud Architect (Professional) replaces ACP Cloud Computing. The relationship is still useful even though the codes changed.

This distinction should shape study depth. Associate candidates need confident resource provisioning and basic operations. Professional candidates must make design trade-offs across multiple services and failure domains. If a learner cannot yet build and troubleshoot the core environment, jumping directly into architect-level scenarios can create memorized patterns without practical understanding.

Use ACP-Cloud1 to understand history, then prepare for CAP-C01. A candidate working from an archived ACP-Cloud1 page should use it to identify enduring cloud topics, then remap those topics to the current Cloud Architect (Professional) outline. Service names, recommended patterns and exam emphasis can change, so current Alibaba Cloud documentation and current training must control the final plan.

A strong capstone exercise is to design one workload three ways: cost optimized, highly available and disaster resilient. For each version, document network topology, compute strategy, data placement, identity controls, monitoring, recovery assumptions and expected cost trade-offs. Comparing those designs develops the reasoning that separates professional architecture from product recall and prepares the learner for the role-based program Alibaba Cloud operates now.

Professional-level cloud architecture also requires deliberate treatment of deployment and change. A resilient architecture can still fail during release if application versions, database changes and routing updates are sequenced badly. Blue-green, rolling and other controlled deployment patterns should be understood in terms of blast radius, rollback and state compatibility rather than as fashionable labels. The architect's job is to make change survivable.

Migration scenarios provide another way to test professional judgment. Moving an existing workload to Alibaba Cloud may involve rehosting some components, modernizing others and retaining certain systems on premises for a period. Network connectivity, identity integration, data transfer, cutover planning and rollback all become part of one design. The right target architecture is only half the answer; the organization also needs a credible path to reach it.

Finally, architects should document assumptions. A diagram that silently assumes one Region, constant traffic, no regulatory constraints and perfect external dependencies can appear robust until reality changes. State the traffic model, recovery objectives, data residency needs, trust boundaries and operational ownership. Explicit assumptions make design reviews more rigorous and expose where additional resilience or controls are actually required.

Capacity planning is another professional concern that should be modeled rather than guessed. Architects need enough headroom for predictable peaks and component failure, but they should also know which tiers can scale horizontally, which require vertical changes and which managed services impose quotas or connection limits. A design that looks elastic at the web tier may still be constrained by a database or downstream dependency.

Governance becomes more important as the environment expands across teams. Account structure, naming, tagging, cost ownership and change permissions should make it possible to operate the platform without giving every team unrestricted control. These practices reduce accidental coupling and make architecture decisions visible to finance, security and operations as well as engineers.
