The Microsoft AZ-802 Administering Windows Server exam is the current Windows Server administration path after AZ-800 and AZ-801 retired on September 30, 2026. Instead of splitting the role across two assessments, AZ-802 brings identity, hybrid management, virtualization, networking, storage, security, monitoring, and troubleshooting into one operational exam.
This consolidation better reflects real administration. A Windows Server problem rarely stays inside one category. Authentication depends on DNS and network reachability. Virtual machines depend on storage and host health. Security controls affect remote administration. Recovery depends on monitoring, backup, identity, and application dependencies.
AZ-802 therefore rewards administrators who can manage a server estate as a connected system. Candidates transitioning from AZ-800 or AZ-801 already have much of the foundation; the task is to integrate those skills under the current single-exam blueprint.
Active Directory Domain Services is still central to the Windows Server role. Administrators need to deploy and maintain domain controllers, manage sites and replication, understand trusts, handle flexible single master operation roles, and troubleshoot authentication. These are not legacy skills simply because cloud identity exists.
Hybrid environments make the relationship more complex. Some identities and policies originate on-premises while cloud services use Microsoft Entra controls. Administrators need to know where an authentication decision occurs and which directory, network path, or synchronization process the application depends on.
Build a lab with at least two domain controllers and more than one site. Break replication or name resolution and observe the resulting symptoms. This creates a stronger mental model than learning AD DS only through role-installation wizards.
PowerShell should be used alongside graphical administration because it makes configuration repeatable and inspectable. Practice querying directory objects, testing service state, checking network settings, and applying controlled changes through scripts. The objective is not to memorize hundreds of cmdlets; it is to recognize when automation provides a safer and more consistent method than manual clicks.
For Group Policy, learn to separate design from troubleshooting. Keep policy objects scoped to clear purposes, understand precedence, and use generated policy results to explain why a setting is present. A sprawling collection of overlapping GPOs can make even simple server changes difficult to predict.
AZ-802 expects familiarity with Azure Arc, Azure Monitor, Azure Update Manager, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Windows Admin Center, and PowerShell. Together these tools allow administrators to inventory, govern, patch, secure, and observe servers that may live in Azure, another cloud, or a local datacenter.
The important concept is consistent management rather than forced migration. A server can remain on-premises while Azure provides policy, monitoring, update coordination, or security posture information. That can reduce the operational gap between cloud and traditional infrastructure.
Hybrid management also creates dependencies. Agents need connectivity and identity. Policy can block or alter configuration. Centralized automation can spread mistakes quickly. Administrators should test rollout rings, change controls, and recovery paths before applying broad configuration across a fleet.
Update management is a useful example. Patch compliance is not just the percentage of machines reporting “up to date.” Administrators need maintenance windows, reboot expectations, application-owner coordination, rollback planning, and an escalation path for systems that repeatedly fail installation. A hybrid control plane can make status visible, but it cannot decide the business impact of rebooting a critical service.
AZ-802 covers virtual machines because most Windows Server workloads now operate in virtualized environments. Hyper-V and Azure virtual machines expose different management surfaces, but the operational questions are similar: capacity, isolation, network attachment, storage performance, backup, patching, and failure recovery.
Hyper-V administrators should understand virtual switches, checkpoints, dynamic memory, virtual disks, live migration concepts, and host resource pressure. Azure administrators should connect VM configuration to availability zones, managed disks, network interfaces, identity, monitoring, and update management.
A VM that is “running” can still provide a failed service. Track the application dependency chain rather than stopping at the hypervisor or Azure resource state.
Windows Server workloads depend heavily on DNS for domain services, application discovery, management, and hybrid connectivity. Administrators should understand forward and reverse zones, records, dynamic registration, forwarding, conditional forwarding, replication scope, and how clients choose a resolver.
The mechanics described in DNS resolution become especially important when on-premises servers also consume private Azure services. A wrong DNS answer can route a client to a public endpoint or make a private service appear unavailable.
Troubleshooting should validate both name and route. Confirm the address returned, test the expected port, review firewall policy, and verify the service itself. This is more reliable than assuming every name-resolution failure is “a DNS problem” or every timeout is “a network problem.”
Windows Server remains widely used for file services and application storage. Administrators need to understand volumes, permissions, SMB behavior, Storage Spaces, deduplication, replication, quotas, and the operational consequences of capacity or latency problems.
Hybrid designs may add Azure Files, backup, synchronization, or cloud-hosted virtual machines. The Azure storage landscape can help clarify which cloud services are appropriate, but migrating a file workload still requires attention to permissions, naming, application compatibility, and user behavior.
Monitor free space, latency, throughput, failed jobs, and access errors. Storage incidents often develop gradually, so trend data is more useful than a dashboard viewed only after users report a problem.
AZ-802 includes securing Windows Server infrastructure rather than treating security as a separate specialist exam. Administrators need to harden systems, protect credentials, apply least privilege, manage updates, use Defender capabilities, secure remote administration, and understand the consequences of configuration drift.
Security controls should be maintainable. A hardened server that requires domain-admin credentials for routine support is not a strong design. Use delegated permissions, managed service accounts where appropriate, separate administrative identities, and role-specific access.
Apply changes with drift in mind. A manually hardened server can slowly diverge from its peers as emergency exceptions accumulate. Baselines, configuration-as-code techniques, policy, and periodic validation can reveal differences before they become incident causes. Document intentional exceptions with owners and review dates so temporary workarounds do not become permanent unknowns.
Backup configuration should also be considered a security control. Protect vault access, use appropriate retention and immutability features, and ensure privileged compromise of a server does not automatically provide the ability to destroy every recovery copy.
Cloud-based posture management can surface misconfiguration, but local system knowledge remains essential. Administrators should be able to explain why a recommendation matters and what operational change will remediate it safely.
AZ-802 explicitly includes monitoring and troubleshooting. Metrics, Windows event logs, performance counters, Azure Monitor data, update status, Defender alerts, and service-specific logs should help administrators decide whether the issue is identity, compute, storage, network, security, or application related.
Azure monitoring is useful for centralized visibility, especially across hybrid fleets. However, alert volume must be controlled. A monitoring system that produces constant low-value noise trains operators to ignore the signal that matters.
Define a small set of health indicators for each service, then connect alerts to ownership and response steps. Monitoring becomes operationally valuable when it shortens diagnosis and recovery time.
Microsoft’s current AZ-802 scope includes AD DS, hybrid workloads, virtual machines, networking, storage and file services, security, monitoring, and troubleshooting. These domains overlap heavily, so scenario-based preparation should force candidates to cross boundaries.
For example, a server may fail to authenticate after migration because of DNS, routing, firewall, time synchronization, domain-controller reachability, or account configuration. The candidate needs a sequence for narrowing the problem rather than a memorized list of command names.
This is why the transition from two exams to one can be useful for learning. It encourages the administrator to think in systems rather than in certification modules.
Capacity and lifecycle planning also belong in that systems view. Administrators should track supported Windows Server versions, hardware or VM sizing, storage growth, licensing implications, and application dependencies before a platform reaches end of support. Technical debt becomes an operational risk when an old server cannot be patched, moved, or restored on supported infrastructure.
For fleet operations, consistency is as important as expertise on one machine. Inventory server roles, owners, patch state, backup coverage, monitoring status, and critical dependencies. Microsoft certifications are most useful when they reinforce the ability to manage that estate predictably rather than rewarding one-off fixes.
A productive AZ-802 lab contains domain services, at least one member server, virtualization, file or storage services, multiple network segments, monitoring, and a connection to Azure management where possible. Use Windows Admin Center and PowerShell alongside graphical tools.
Then introduce controlled failures. Break DNS forwarding, remove a permission, fill a volume, stop a critical service, create an update problem, or block network traffic. Collect evidence before fixing the issue and write down the root cause.
The hybrid Windows Server foundation is still the right mental model: local and cloud tools work together, and the administrator’s job is to keep the workload secure, observable, and recoverable across those boundaries.
Keep a small operational runbook for the lab. Record normal DNS, replication, storage, patch, and monitoring states before introducing faults. Comparing broken behavior with a known baseline builds the diagnostic judgment AZ-802 needs and makes troubleshooting faster than relying on memory.
Include ownership in that runbook as well: identify who responds to identity, network, storage, security, and application failures so escalation is part of the design rather than invented during an outage.
