“CAMS7” can look like the name of a separate ACAMS credential, especially when it appears in course files, study products and exam-preparation listings. In the current program, however, the credential candidates earn is still Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist, or CAMS. CAMS7 is best understood as seventh-edition/version language associated with the refreshed CAMS learning and examination program rather than a different professional designation.
That distinction should shape preparation. A candidate searching specifically for CAMS7 does not need to build a second study track alongside CAMS. The goal is to make sure study materials reflect the current enhanced curriculum, current examination format and current competency model. Older CAMS resources may still explain enduring AML principles well, but they should be checked against the seventh-edition program before being treated as complete.
The current program belongs to the broader ACAMS certifications portfolio. ACAMS's 2026 official factsheet assets use CAMS7 naming while its public certification page continues to call the credential CAMS, which is the clearest way to reconcile the two labels.
The most important preparation decision is to separate credential identity from curriculum version. The professional designation remains CAMS. Seventh-edition terminology helps identify whether a learning package, factsheet or preparation source is aligned with the newer program. It should not be interpreted to mean that holders of “CAMS7” possess a different certification from holders of CAMS.
This matters because version confusion can produce two opposite mistakes. Some candidates may ignore current material because they believe their older CAMS notes cover everything. Others may throw away useful foundational material because it does not contain the CAMS7 label. A better approach is to audit the material by topic and date. Keep durable explanations of concepts such as risk-based CDD, suspicious activity and governance, but replace or supplement material where the current curriculum has changed its structure, terminology or emphasis.
The dedicated CAMS exam page represents the same current credential. Use the CAMS7 label primarily as a version-control signal when organizing preparation.
The present CAMS exam contains 120 multiple-choice questions and allows three and a half hours. ACAMS describes the questions as a mix of theoretical and scenario-based material. Active ACAMS membership and 40 eligibility credits are part of the current application requirements.
Those numbers matter for pacing, but they do not describe the real challenge. The exam moves across customer risk, financial-crime methods, regulatory frameworks, program governance, monitoring, investigations, sanctions and technology. A candidate can know each topic in isolation and still lose time if every scenario requires rebuilding the connection between risk, obligation and control.
Practice should therefore become increasingly mixed. Early study can be domain-specific, but later sessions should force rapid switching. That mirrors the way a specialist works: a customer-risk issue can lead into monitoring, sanctions screening, escalation and governance within the same case.
The current learning design groups CAMS around four core competency areas. The first addresses risks and methods of financial crime. The second covers global AFC frameworks, governance and regulations. The third focuses on building an AFC compliance program. The fourth covers tools and technologies used to fight financial crime.
This structure is more useful than treating the syllabus as hundreds of unrelated facts. Financial-crime methods explain what the institution is trying to detect or prevent. Frameworks explain why the institution has obligations. The compliance-program competency translates those obligations into policies, controls and operating processes. Technology supports execution, scale and analysis.
When reviewing seventh-edition material, continually ask which competency a topic belongs to and how it connects to the other three. A sanctions-screening scenario, for example, is not only a technology question. It can involve legal restrictions, customer data, ownership, escalation and governance.
Typology memorization has limited value if the candidate cannot explain why the behavior is concerning. Study money laundering, terrorist financing, proliferation financing, fraud-linked proceeds and other financial crimes by examining the movement of value, the actors involved, the products or channels used and the signals that distinguish normal activity from elevated risk.
A single red flag rarely settles the analysis. Complex ownership can have legitimate commercial purposes. International transfers can be routine for a trading company. Cash activity can be expected for certain businesses. The compliance decision becomes stronger when several facts conflict with the customer profile, stated purpose, expected geography or known source of funds.
For CAMS7 preparation, turn lists of red flags into questions: What additional information would reduce uncertainty? Which facts are objectively inconsistent? Is the issue customer risk, transaction risk, sanctions exposure or suspected criminal activity? What should happen next under a risk-based process?
Customer due diligence should be understood as a lifecycle rather than a one-time document collection exercise. The institution identifies and verifies the customer, establishes beneficial ownership where required, understands the purpose and expected nature of the relationship, assigns risk and applies enhanced measures when risk justifies them.
Ongoing monitoring then tests whether actual activity remains consistent with that understanding. Periodic or event-driven reviews update the customer profile. Material changes in ownership, business activity, geography or transaction behavior can justify reassessment. This is why weak onboarding data creates downstream problems: monitoring systems and investigators rely on the customer information captured earlier.
Candidates who work mainly in KYC can use the narrower CKYCA certification exam as a reference point for where specialist onboarding skills sit. CAMS7 expects those skills to be integrated into a wider AFC program.
A good AFC program depends on accountability. Senior leadership must support the program, compliance needs sufficient authority and resources, the business must execute controls, and independent assurance must test whether those controls work. Policies without ownership tend to become paperwork; systems without governance tend to drift away from their original purpose.
Study governance by tracing a problem from discovery to resolution. If alert backlogs become excessive, who identifies the issue? Who decides whether risk is acceptable? What immediate controls are needed? How is root cause established? Who validates remediation? The strongest answer usually respects the institution's governance model rather than assuming the compliance officer personally performs every action.
Also distinguish monitoring, quality assurance and internal audit. They can all review activity, but their purpose, independence and reporting relationships differ. Scenarios frequently become easier once the type of oversight being described is identified.
The seventh-edition program's explicit technology competency reflects the reality of modern AFC operations. Screening, transaction monitoring, case management, analytics and automation all depend on systems and data. Candidates need to understand how these tools help and where they can fail.
Data lineage and quality are fundamental. If a critical customer identifier never reaches the screening engine, accurate list-matching logic cannot repair the omission. If transaction-monitoring rules are never tuned, they may generate unmanageable alert volumes or miss relevant behavior. If a model is changed without validation and governance, performance can deteriorate without anyone recognizing it.
Human judgment remains necessary even as automation improves. Technology can prioritize cases, find patterns and reduce manual work, but investigators and compliance leaders remain responsible for interpreting results, resolving uncertainty and documenting defensible decisions.
Sanctions and AML controls often use similar information but respond to different risks and legal obligations. The candidate should understand customer and payment screening, list management, ownership issues, geographic exposure and escalation without treating every sanctions alert as an AML investigation.
The distinction is useful because it forces precise reasoning. Suspicious activity analysis asks whether behavior may indicate criminal or illicit conduct. Sanctions analysis asks whether a restriction or prohibition applies. The two can intersect, but one does not automatically answer the other.
Professionals whose roles become heavily sanctions-focused can compare the broader CAMS base with the Certified Global Sanctions Specialist program. For CAMS7, the goal is to understand sanctions well enough to place them correctly within an integrated AFC control environment.
Do not judge an old resource only by its publication date. Break it into components. First, identify enduring concepts: the risk-based approach, customer due diligence logic, suspicious-activity investigation, governance and the basic purpose of monitoring. These may remain useful. Second, identify items that age quickly: regulatory references, program structure, technology examples, exam format and named competencies. Verify or replace those.
Third, look for missing emphasis. The current program gives explicit attention to tools and technologies, and its competency structure may organize familiar topics differently. A resource can be factually correct yet still be incomplete for the current examination because it does not connect material in the way the exam now expects.
Finally, be cautious with practice questions that repeatedly reward memorized trivia. Current scenario-based preparation should make you explain why an action is appropriate, what risk it addresses and what must happen before the next step.
Start with the current CAMS competencies and build a gap map rather than beginning with random practice questions. Study financial-crime risks first so later controls have a purpose. Then review the regulatory and governance framework that creates institutional obligations. Move into customer controls, monitoring, investigations, reporting and sanctions. Finish the first pass with technology and control integration.
On the second pass, stop studying domains separately. Build short scenarios that force connections. Give a customer a risk profile, ownership structure and expected activity; then add a transaction pattern or sanctions-screening event. Decide what information matters, what control should respond and where escalation belongs. This is closer to the reasoning the exam rewards.
As test day approaches, use timed mixed sets and track error causes. Separate content gaps from sequencing errors and rushed reading. If a mistake came from confusing a sanctions issue with an AML suspicion, fix that conceptual boundary. If it came from failing to identify the customer lifecycle stage, practice that classification.
A current editorial discussion of CAMS test-day considerations can supplement the plan, but version control is the central CAMS7 lesson. Prepare for one current CAMS credential using material that genuinely reflects the seventh-edition program, and keep older resources only where they still teach the right concepts accurately.
