CPA Exam 2026: Core, Discipline, and Study Priorities

The CPA Exam now follows the CPA Evolution Core-and-Discipline model. Every candidate must pass three Core sections—Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), and Taxation and Regulation (REG)—plus one Discipline chosen from Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Controls (ISC), or Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP). Passing a particular Discipline does not create a different CPA license; it changes the area in which the examination goes deeper.

The CPA certification must also be separated from the exam itself. The Uniform CPA Examination is common, but eligibility, education, experience, ethics, application, and credit-retention rules are controlled by U.S. jurisdictions and Boards of Accountancy. Candidates should use the AICPA exam framework for what is tested and their chosen jurisdiction for licensure requirements.

For 2026 preparation, the official blueprints matter because they define content, skill levels, item types, and weighting. AICPA has published blueprints effective January 1, 2026, along with a summary of changes. Tax and law content also follows the exam’s new-pronouncement policy, so old preparation can become wrong even when the underlying accounting logic is familiar.

Understand the three Core sections before choosing a Discipline

AUD focuses on audit and attestation engagements, ethics, professional responsibilities, evidence, risk, reporting, and related procedures. FAR tests financial accounting and reporting across business entities, not-for-profit organizations, and other reporting topics. REG centers on federal taxation, business law, ethics, and professional responsibilities. These three sections represent knowledge expected of all newly licensed CPAs.

The Core sections overlap in professional judgment. A transaction may appear in FAR as accounting, in AUD as evidence and risk, and in REG as tax treatment. Studying them as isolated silos can make the exam feel larger than it is. Build connections among assertions, internal controls, financial-statement effects, tax consequences, and professional responsibilities where the blueprints support those relationships.

Candidates should avoid postponing a weak Core indefinitely while focusing on a preferred specialty. The license still requires all three. A study sequence can reflect work experience and testing windows, but the plan should acknowledge the full four-section requirement from the beginning.

Section order can be used to reinforce overlap. For example, taking FAR before AUD may make financial-statement assertions and accounting estimates more concrete for some candidates, while a tax professional may prefer REG early because daily work supports retention. There is no universal best sequence; the useful sequence is the one that respects credit windows, testing availability, and the candidate’s knowledge dependencies.

Choose BAR, ISC, or TCP for fit rather than headline pass rates

BAR goes deeper into analysis and reporting, including financial analysis, technical accounting, state and local government accounting, and data-related topics. ISC emphasizes information systems, IT audit and controls, SOC engagements, security, privacy, and data management. TCP extends taxation into more advanced compliance and planning for individuals and entities.

AICPA has cautioned against treating pass rates as a simple difficulty ranking because candidates self-select into Disciplines and arrive with different education and experience. A tax professional may find TCP familiar; an IT auditor may be better aligned with ISC; a candidate in reporting or advisory work may prefer BAR. The best fit is the section whose content you can support with both study and practical context.

Read the 2026 blueprint for all three before deciding. Compare topic weights, skill levels, and task statements to your coursework and work experience. The Discipline choice should reduce the amount of entirely new material without narrowing future career options, because the CPA credential itself remains the same.

Career alignment can also improve motivation during the longest study stretches. A candidate who routinely evaluates controls may find ISC scenarios meaningful, while someone working with partnerships and owner transactions may see direct relevance in TCP. The Discipline still requires blueprint coverage beyond day-to-day work, but practical context can make unfamiliar details easier to organize and remember.

Learn the five-testlet structure and practise both item types

Each CPA Exam section is delivered in five testlets. The first two contain multiple-choice questions, and the final three contain task-based simulations. The 2026 AICPA blueprint lists section-specific counts: for example, AUD uses 78 MCQs and seven TBSs, while FAR uses 50 MCQs and seven TBSs. Discipline counts also vary. Candidates should train against the format of the specific section rather than one generic question mix.

MCQs reward efficient recognition and application, but TBSs require candidates to organize information, use exhibits, make calculations, complete forms or schedules, and apply professional judgment over a longer task. A candidate who studies only by answering isolated multiple-choice questions may know the content and still be unprepared to manage a simulation.

Use the official sample test to learn the software environment. Familiarity with exhibits, navigation, spreadsheet functionality, and response formats reduces test-day friction. The sample test is not a prediction of exact content; it is a way to practise interacting with the assessment.

Time management should be rehearsed at the section level. Do not spend so long perfecting early multiple-choice questions that the final simulations are rushed. During full practice, establish checkpoints for leaving each testlet and learn how much review time is realistic. A timing plan should be tested under pressure before exam day rather than invented at the testing center.

Use blueprint task statements as the study checklist

The blueprint is more precise than a chapter list. It organizes content by Area, Group, and Topic, gives weighting, identifies skill levels, and provides representative task statements. Turn those task statements into questions: Can you calculate this? Can you analyze a difference? Can you prepare or evaluate the required information? Can you identify the appropriate procedure or treatment?

Build a tracker that marks each task as not learned, learned with notes, retrievable without notes, or demonstrated in mixed practice. This makes progress measurable and reveals when a study course has moved on before mastery. High-weight weak areas should receive disproportionate time, but lower-weight areas should not be abandoned because the exam samples broadly.

When a review provider uses different labels from AICPA, map the provider’s chapters back to the official blueprint. That protects the candidate from assuming that course length equals exam weight and makes it easier to verify that no official area was skipped.

For simulations, practise navigating exhibits selectively. Read the requirement first, determine which documents are relevant, and avoid treating every exhibit as equally important. Some tasks deliberately include more information than is needed. The ability to filter evidence is part of professional work and helps prevent a candidate from losing time in a large document set.

Tax and law preparation must respect the testing-date rules

The CPA Exam has explicit policies for when new accounting, auditing, tax, and legal pronouncements become testable. For federal tax changes, timing depends on enactment or effective dates and a six-month rule; other pronouncements have their own eligibility timing. Once a change becomes testable, superseded content is removed. This makes old memorization especially risky in REG and TCP.

AICPA’s 2026 materials include guidance related to recent federal tax legislation. Candidates should use the blueprint and official update pages to determine the law base for their testing window, then make sure commercial materials have been updated accordingly. Do not mix rules from different tax years in one note set.

For changing rules, create dated summaries. Record the testable rule, the effective or exam-relevant period, and the source used to verify it. That discipline is more reliable than trying to remember whether a number came from this year’s lecture, last year’s textbook, or a forum answer.

Study for analysis, not just recognition

The modern CPA Exam is designed around skill levels that extend beyond recall. Candidates need to apply procedures, analyze information, and in some sections evaluate evidence or decisions. A useful study routine therefore alternates learning with production: solve, explain, reconcile, research within allowed resources, and complete simulations.

When reviewing a missed question, write the accounting, audit, tax, or control principle before looking at the explanation. Then identify the fact in the scenario that should have triggered that principle. This trains recognition of decision cues and reduces dependence on memorized question wording.

Mixed practice should increase as the exam approaches. Real testlets do not announce that the next item comes from the same chapter as the previous one. Switching among topics exposes whether the candidate can identify the governing concept quickly and maintain accuracy under time constraints.

Coordinate exam planning with jurisdiction rules

Passing the Uniform CPA Examination is only one part of licensure. Jurisdictions set education requirements, eligibility to sit, experience, ethics, application procedures, and the period for retaining passed sections. NASBA and state boards provide jurisdiction-specific information, and candidates should verify those rules before scheduling an aggressive multi-section plan.

Keep records of Notices to Schedule, exam dates, passed sections, credit expiration, education evaluations, and application deadlines. Administrative mistakes can waste a testing window even when the study plan is strong. International candidates should also confirm where testing is available and which jurisdiction will evaluate their education.

The CPA exam rewards a long view. Select a Discipline that fits, sequence the sections around real strengths and deadlines, study from the 2026 blueprints, and keep licensure requirements visible from the first application through the final board submission.

Credit-retention rules have changed in many jurisdictions in recent years, and candidates should not assume an old 18-month rule applies. Check the current board or NASBA jurisdiction page for your own status. A multi-section plan that ignores the actual retention window can be unnecessarily stressful or, in the opposite direction, far too slow.
